I am brand new to FGU. In fact I just ran my first game last night. I needed to be able to point out different things on the map to my players but can't seem to figure out how to do so. I know this is extremely basic. but I can' t seem to find an answer on how to do this. I would really appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!

Use the pointers functionality. Right click on the image and then the menu at 11 o’clock.

Follow up question. Is there a way for the players to mark up a map to include text. For instance, label a town, or mark a location with "found key here".

Quick Pointers are faster than the right mouse pointers. Each character/GM can only have one at a time. Use the right & left mouse together. It will draw an arrow, if you hold down Ctrl as well it will draw a circle. Alt will draw a cone, and Shift will add a square.
Click left-right to remove.
Currently their is no text mark up tool. Their is a draw tool, right mouse pencil/paintbrush that you can freehand what you want.

There's not a way for players to markup a map with text.
The best they can do is add tokens to the map, if the GM has shared some tokens with them. This is where a default set of tokens - letters or default RPG type images can help.

I never thought of using tokens like that. I got it fixed in my mind that token are for PCs and NPCs. Thank you for the idea.
Is there a way for the GM to add text on the fly?

Thanks, excellent tip, didn't know about this!

After you drop the token on the map, drag some text from the chatbox onto the token.

I created fancy blue arrow token. Then I dropped it on the map. Made sure it was "unlocked." Now anyone can pick it up and use it to point at things.

Somehow I never knew this. This is very useful. Thanks!

Following up on this question, is there any way at all to reveal to players something written to the DM map gradually?
For instance, the DM map of Phandalin in the Essentials Kit has many locations marked.
If I wished to show only the ones that the players have visited, how would I go about to do so?

I use story pins. Either linked to a new story with just the info the players know, or to the default story if it doesn't contain anything they don't know. Then you can share the pins one at a time. You can also update the story as they learn more about the location or the people associated to it.

I also use pins on maps. They're perfect and my players like using them.
I populate the whole map with them and then Share them out when needed. So (for example) when players get to a city, they have a mostly empty overhead map which slowly gets more pins revealed as they explore and discover the town. The pins easily editable, and the text/descriptions can grow as the story does.

LordEntrails and Gaglug, thanks for the input! It seems a nice way to do what I needed. :)

Or use this extension and the players can add their own observations/information to entries. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?54284-Player-Agency-Extension
