I am absolutely new to FGU, I was trying to find if various class abilities such as the rouge's backstab or the barbarian's rage ability was hard coded into the 5ed rule set. I just watched a video on how to add effect to a character's sheet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVlNMGVSyKM&list=PLvtWYj3HpGj5yzVugpCeoUzxtJ0i906QG&index=3). Do I need to do this myself or are do things like backstab and rage need to be handled via effects added by the FGU user?

There are different ways you can code and handle most class abilities and they are not automated. You can see how those can be created as effects on teh action tabl of the character in that video (or others) Also you can check the wiki for the 5E Effects page for more info on effects. Also see the resource sticky int he 5E forums that will link to posts such as "The Complete Rogue" thread that has a level 20 rogue with all class abilities coded into it. And their are similar threads for the Xanathar classes too.

Open your FG Data folder using the icon on the FG launch screen (it's possible you are not using the location you specified for your data folder). If their is not an extensions folder where that opens up, create one and then add the extension there.

It seems like Rage is automated in FGClassic. I played with Adventurer's league yesterday and the DM was able to tell me how to enable it as an effect. I THINK I remember how to do that. I may get on tonight and play with Character creation and see if I can remember how it's done. I'm not sure, but I would expect it to be available in FGUnity as well.

Open the ability from the Abilities tab. Switch to the actions tab, drag the icon from the open ability window to the powers section of the actions tab. Open the ability action and modify if needed to fir your preferences.

Watch the first video in this series which will show you how to create effects such as the ones you speak of https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?41478-Effects-Videos-for-5E

There's also the wiki which has lots of examples https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGU/pages/884913/5E+Effects+for+Advanced+Automation

And there's the complete package series which has all the effects for each class built into a character https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27296-Guides-videos-and-other-helpful-information&p=432115&viewfull=1#post432115
