i just switched from classic to unity and am i missing something or can you no longer manage your character when not in a campaign?

There is no manage characters button. You can create a new campaign, and import any character from a campaign you've played in before. Free versions couldn't create campaigns before; but they can in FGU (they just can't host a game).
