There's a field on the SWADE character sheet for "Setting" and when you click, it opens "Setting Mods".

Can anyone explain what kind of information you can/should put into this box and whether it causes any sort of automation?

there is no automation nor magic behind this. This is one of the legacy feature that was added in ten year ago when automation was not big thing. You can use this feature the way you like.

Oh for fraggs sake, and I've spent days trying to figure out what it does >___< No wonder I couldn't find anything.

It wasn't so much that I desperately needed it to do something. I just couldn't deal with the pure mystery of not knowing :)
