View Full Version : Character Portrait not loading on Import

We are trying to figure out how to best manage our characters, using them between different campaigns run by different GMs. One attempt has been to create a campaign specifically to store the characters. We then create a new campaign, for playing. When the GM imports the character into the new campaign, there is an error and the character loads, but without the portrait. These are two campaigns being run by the same GM. (We haven't even started trying to figure out how share characters between GMs.) the character's portrait and token are stored in the Portrait and token folders. We have tried re-adding the portrait to the character in our Character only campaign, and then tried adding the character again to a new campaign. Same result.

So, how do we manage player characters and use them in multiple campaigns, run by either the same, or different GMs?

Welcome Figment16

Portraits are not stored or loaded or exported. Only the XML is. The Portrait has to be reassigned.

Players can be responsible for their own portraits. If a player stores all of their own portraits in the Fantasy Grounds portraits folder (on the player's local computer, not the GM's), it is quick and easy (and even fun) to reattach an image to any character sheet once it is imported into a campaign. Keep all of your character's images in this folder, and even some crazy ones for a laugh. Once connected to your GM's campaign and your character sheet is open, double-click the portrait icon on the character page (the left circular icon in the upper-right corner of the character sheet) and select the image from the folder that opens. This works for goofy images too during your session if you want to to mess with your fellow players while playing.

Players keeping up with character portraits; also allows them to change character appearance as the story progresses, based on what has happened to them.

Did they get new armor?
Have a really noticeable scar now?
A new favorite weapon maybe?

Depending on the game you are playing, you could even change the character portrait to reflect spell effects. Such as in D&D: Polymorph, Wildshape, Invisibility, let your imagination run wild here!

Portraits should be square and they really should not be bigger than 400px x 400px.
Its possible to have crashes etc from players loading very large portraits.

Appreciate the replies. The xml file does contain a pointer to a portrait, hence my thinking the reason for the load error. I do wish there was a means for players to manage their own character files and export/import them as needed.

Hi all!
I ran across this thread while trying to get to the bottom of this error.
I was able to find the cause and effect a temporary fix in the form of a small extension!

Just to clarify, the portrait (token) SHOULD import with the character sheet data as long as the appropriate token pak is installed locally.
And this DOES work in CoreRPG, appears to be a 5E issue only.

See the link to the extension for more info!
