I'm aware the standard array is the gold standard here at FG.
BUT.
I dislike the standard array because I love Feats. If I play anything other than a Var Human, I have to wait until 12th level to get a feat after maxing out my main stat. Typically the standard array allows for only ONE outstanding stat.

How unbalanced would this be if I replaced the array with this?
17, 15, 14, 13, 10, 8 (there always has to be one dump stat). after arranging to taste, add the racial mods.
In my opinion this would be the only way to play a monk...

This would allow a player to excel in two stats right away, and grab a feat at 8th level.

Now I know there are people out there who say, hey if it works for you go for it. My response would be, would this work for you?

Others might say, stats don't really matter anymore. My response would be, would this work for you?

So. Would this work in your campaign? Or would apocalyptic events start to occur?

I don't like standard arrays. I use them for one shots and when doing pre-gens, but never when players are actually creating their own characters.

So if you are running a game and give all your players they same array then it won't break anything. But if you are a player and want this array and not everyone else gets it then it would be unfair. Wouldn't break anything, just wouldn't be fair.

Personally, I like 4d6-L assign as desired. It gives variety and flavor and generally invalidates typically min/max/optimized builds. (But that's because I want players focused on character concepts not mechanics).

I wouldn't allow it. Especially if you are talking about a Monk. They are already pretty much the most powerful class in the game and giving them two huge stat boosts at first level is over the top. But if you are the DM and like the idea that's just fine; if you are the player prepare to convince your DM.

4d6 keep highest 3 is roughly the same as a 31-point, point buy with a range from 3 to 18. Your spread (assuming that 16 steps up the cost just like 14 did) is a 38-point, point buy and slightly better than "5d6 keep highest 3". So, I'd not allow it myself.

That said what I do is a 31-point, point buy that allows up to 18 and down to 6. This online tool (https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html) has a great "custom" setting that lets it work easily. This makes the same average as rolling but without the inherent unfairness of one player having crap and another being a deity at the same time.

Playing around with it, a 17, 15, 12, 10, 8, 8 is a 31-point character. So is 17, 14, 13, 10, 10, 8. Either of those I'd allow.
