View Full Version : Impromptu mapping

Greetings!

Hopefully this is the right place to post this. If not, mods please move to the appropriate location.

Over the weekend, my players (in ToA) did the Pterafolk nest at Mbala. However, there was no pre-made cave map, etc., for that encounter. At the time, I had no idea how to do that on the fly, and as of this moment, still don't.

So, looking on YT for some learning material, I happened across this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoxEyNzFoio which demonstrates exactly what I'm trying to accomplish.

Yet, I'm distressed that I can't locate the resources used to accomplish the task as demonstrated in the video.

I did back the FGU whilst it was on KS, if that helps determine anything. I did look through my assets and I see the Saz, Shockbolt, and Torstans assets packs. Shockbolt has a cave floor that is workable, but no walls, and Torstans has no walls.

Am I missing something or am I going about things the wrong way?

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

//s// Jon C. Munson II

Moved from the Armory. The Armory is where people share their FG creations.

Well, did I post this in the wrong place altogether?

Good Day JMunsonII :)
Damned had a brilliant shortcut for a quickie map. Just import a blank background and mask the entire thing, then just use the unmask to show rooms and halls and such. Since you mentioned caves, you can hold down the Shift key as you unmask and you can draw whatever shape you desire. I personally would just send the players to a quick Bio Break and make an internet search for a suitable map (There are tons out there) throw it in the campaign images folder, then put a grid on it to make it fit the size you need.

Thank you Bonkon. I'll have a try at the shift-draw as I didn't know about that. And also for the tip about the maps widely available.

I take it the LOS drawing tools are still under development?

Good Day JMunsonII :)
My pleasure, as far as LOS is concerned that is in FGU, which I have not played with so I cannot answer that, but the Fog of War should limit the players sight anyway so only unmask what they can see :)

In the Unity version at least (haven't tried it in FGC) Shift+click just hides an area. Click or shift-click only applies a rectangle...

Hmmm, looks like they changed some mapping commands in FGU, sorry I cannot expand on that but I hope someone can pop in here soon and help. I hope they did not remove the unmask drawing, or if they did it is only temporary as they finish the Beta. :)

About impromptu mapping (sorry, I didn't the full discussion here now), see here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGU/pages/688298/Interacting+with+Tabletop and especially https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGU/pages/950633/Working+with+Images+as+the+GM :) You have to drag&drop the asset in some image window of the drawing panel and then just draw with that asset :) (you can also use the circle or rectangle mode and so on, e.g. to draw a circle of lava using the lava asset :) )

Thank you, yes, I discerned that from the video. The assets in the video seem to be in an area (or totally different from FGU Beta) than I can find. In short, I'm missing the cave wall asset. Am I looking in the wrong place for it?

oki, I shortly took a glimpse into that video: That is a very old video, forget that one :D rather look here: https://www.youtube.com/user/smiteworksprez/videos and two of the most recent videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVdiDA-jKp4&t=5s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrpkS3kQbqQ) are about what you want to do, too :) In essence, all the images you want to use are now under assets (where the tokens button was) :) When you used FGC, then you should almost completely forget what you have learned about images :) Therefore really important to either read the wiki or look here, https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?55797-How-do-I-in-Unity, especially the first video :)

Thanks for the continued replies.

I've watched both videos. Both use tiles. The second makes use of a wall asset. This is the asset I can't find - no cave wall asset present on my system. Where do I get that?

And where does one get the tiles/walls/floors, etc., sets? I looked briefly in the store couldn't easily locate them if any are available...

Aaah, so your question is just about finding that one asset? I thought that you were also asking how to use impromptu mapping :) Sorry for the confusion :)

Except the assets coming with the kickstarter there are only two assets so far for such a usage: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/?sys=-1&pub=-1&typ=7&search=sewer&los=1&sort=1

The way how I was able to find them: Filter by the type "Map module" and toggle the box about prepared LoS for FGU :) (these modules are basically FGU only; to avoid getting FGC modules rather toggle that box)

About the cave asset: I searched through the assets with "cave" under "all" and I get a lot of cave walls; reading your first post, I wonder why you do not see these walls? Seemingly only floors? (these I got already via the Kickstarter, so, you should have them, too, all of them seem to be in the Shockbolt Cave assets)

Just did the search for Cave. They're in Shockbolt. Which, honestly, I did look in before I wrote this post... :O :O :O :smh: Really, I did!!!! All I saw were floors and tiles, no walls originally!!! And now I'm confused as to why I couldn't see that before...

'Course, I'm looking on my Mac, which i only use for testing/reading, as my actual campaign stuff is done on my PC. So I'll check that later...

Thanks for the patience!!!

OK, now I see why I didn't see them before - I wasn't looking in the Tiles->Cave bag. I expected they would be in the Walls bag, so I didn't think to look in Tiles...

ah, okay :) Yeah, rather search through all, that is what I always do :D The theme bags seem to have everything for that theme, such that these do not arise in the other bags, even when it would fit :)
