Seeking advice: I know that the only real answer is "It's up to you", but I'm asking, so go ahead and give me your opinions... I've been advocating my various D&D groups to consider using Fantasy Grounds for remote play for years, but I've always been met with resistance and bemoans of "I CAN'T play D&D online... I NEED to be face to face". COVID-19 has forced us to finally try remote play, so far only using Zoom virtual meeting software and theater of the mind (no virtual table top) and it has gone well so far. My question is, if I were to purchase an Ultimate license, which license should I buy right now? Classic or Unity Beta? My fear is that if I buy classic now, and it's a hit, I'll need to upgrade to Unity in the not too distant future, so I wasted some money. However, if I buy Unity now, the fact that it's in beta means it may not be that good of an experience, thus turning off all my players to using a VTT going forward. Suggestions?

If you aren't sure your players will take to it, then an Ultimate subscription to classic would probably be the way to go at the moment. You'll want to keep an eye on the forums to make sure you don't miss out on the 10% discount on the unity version that's available before the official release. If your players like it, go for the unity ultimate to keep playing, and if they don't you've only lost a month or two of subscription.
Edit: Also it's been frequently mentioned on the Forums Smiteworks are known for having a good refund policy (e.g. cancel *before* the end of the first month and ask for your subscription payment back), though I can happily say I've never found the need to take advantage of this.

I'd agree with @The High Druid.
For some FGU is not quite there for trouble free playing and if it's a one-off chance of getting your players onto FG then Classic will be your best bet - as long as you don't have any port forwarding issues...

It has been my recent experience that if you are the DM and running a good game stop asking the players for their input on these matters and just state what you are going to require moving forward. I recently went thru this regarding VTT, Sound, Streaming and Schedule. As soon as I stopped asking them to go down these roads and told them these were the minimum requirements to play in my game they all fell in line and are all happy they did it.
At the same time you know your group, Don't require someone "walk on the moon" if they are incapable. There is a difference between what they prefer to do and what they can do.

Classic Subscription.
I'm excited for FGU, but it is not stable enough for me to run my games with (it is for some folks, but not for me, I'm not willing to miss a session because of an unplanned issue).
