Trying to get a player log into my FGU Ultimate atm and they are getting this message. Before I added the password I did get 2 random people join my game however.

This is the message they get...

"authorized failed: the host is running an authorized copy, or authorization server is down"

Edit:
Found an older post...
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?52284-unauthorized-copy-or-authorization-server-is-down

That says only people with keys can test, I assume even if the host has ultimate at this time correct?

Could it be that the authorised server is down?

No, Free licenses should be able to connect to Ultimate licenses.

Are you sure that the host is running an Ultimate license? It will say v4.0.0 ULTIMATE on the launch screen.

Your players need to install FGU and have to insert their account data in the settings :) They can leave the license box empty but they need an account here on the forums :) (just in case, not sure whether they would get this error then)

Confirming mine says "v4.0.0 ULTIMATE (DATE)" on the Host / Join / Setting UI.
On theirs, on the left side of the top pic it says her account name.

I picked up FGU today. Not sure if that matters.

We're experiencing this same problem. I have a player who has an Ultimate license and he can join my game (I also have an Ultimate license) but another player on the Demo can't join with the exact error described by OP.

Has the demo user entered his forum username and password in settings?

Kelrugem
March 17th, 2020, 03:47
In discord someone was having the same problem; his setup was the following:

1. He has two accounts with different credentials. One account has a unity ultimate license the other one is unity demo
2. He tried to connect with his demo account to his ultimate account, both accounts were on different computers in the same network
3. He used the (public) cloud option
4. I was able to connect to his game
5. His settings for both accounts were seemingly correct

Did anyone of the others having the same issue try to do something similar? I.e. a (demo) client connecting to a host of the same network using the cloud?

I do that regularly to test multiple computer connections. Main computer runs two instances (host and client using same login); and second computer running one instance (client using different login).

Let me add that the Unity demo account is able to connect to other hosts, but not on my host account. My host account is able to accept players, but not from my local network account. However, the FG Classic accounts work fine as LAN connected. I need Cloud support because I cannot port forward with my ISP.

I can host a cloud instance of unity. Go back and launch another instance of unity with the exe, do join, and it shows the hosted instance on the matchmaking server where I am able to connect to the hosted instance. Does that not work for you?

What is your hosting type (Cloud, local, private, etc)?

I know in FGC many routers will not allow a local computer to go out to the internet and then connect back to a computer on it's own network. In FGC computers on the local network should use the internal IP to connect and not the external ip or alias. The local computer might have to connect via the ip address/port option on the connection screen.

Also, I assume this is a second computer and not a second instance on the host computer?

I have the same issue. Hosted a campaign on my PC in cloud, trying to connect my laptop with a demo client over phone hotspot (so it isn't in the same network), it asks for a password, I enter it and get the above error message. On my HOST campaign, I see the Demo account connecting and disconnecting.32201

You have to go into the FG folder and launch the .exe directly, not the updater.

When running a second instance on the same computer you don't need to change the license key, etc.. "Join Campaign" putting localhost as the <IP Address> entry in the "Join By IP and Port" section.

Please tell us more about your specific issue. What settings is the GM using for their game (Cloud - Public/Private? LAN only?) Where are the player/s with the issue connecting from and what are they using to connect? What license do the player/s with the issue have?

Version: 2020-03-16 all systems
One system (host): ultimate
Other systems: FREE
Tried public, lan, and private all same message
Connecting from: multiple laptops tried, different accounts (all free) attempted to join, same issue (unable to attempt account that is not free)
Able to see campaign on server list if public
When players connect, they quickly connect then disconnect (viewed in chatbox as [insert name] connected [insert name] disconnected)
Ultimate license: subscription and key was verified using multiple means

I am also have an issue with players connecting. I picked up a FGU Ultimate license. It is obviously an issue of Demo version. I have 3 friends. 2 of them have the demo version of FGU. One is local and the other is not. Neither can connect. My third friend can connect fine and has Standard FGU. The two using the demo both get a "auth failed, auth server is down or host is using unauthorized copy"

Using the cloud hosting btw as my internet provider is bad at allowing port forwarding. Also just saying I am very pleased with the cloud hosting and it is a great help to me running campaigns.

I have this same error, at least when trying to connect to Server mode game. Demo on the client, Ultimate on the Server. I don't believe it's a firewall issue because (a) I opened up everything and (b) the client does show as connecting and then quickly disconnecting.

I guess the Demo wasn't updated correctly to connect to the ultimate version. Nothing else makes sense since it works with a standard license.

I'm trying to do some testing myself to see if this is a generic issue with the latest version or something else...

The difference between the demo and standard is that the demo, when connecting to the GM, verifies the GM's license key against the FG servers. If it can't verify this license key then the connection is dropped and a message similar to what people are seeing is displayed. The standard doesn't do this.

So is it an issue with our FGU Ultimate keys then or more likely the authentication servers?

maybe it checks against an outdated server (beta, closed) and not live. I don't know. I am sure you'll fix it.

So for those, it was just random servers. I have 2 pc's and signed up for 2 separate accounts (one free and one ultimate) to test this stuff out. Heres what I have for connecting to myself:

Can the player who experiences this issue stop and restart FG and then join the campaign entering the session password in the first attempt. What I'm interested in seeing is if FG fails if the password is entered correctly the first time, or only after there's been an issue with the session password.

It never gives me the option the enter the password before joining. The first time i get prompted to enter a password is also when i get the notification 'Authorization failed: The host has protected the session with a password. Please retry with correct password.'. I've tried uninstalling and re-downloading > Re-Installing, this is the second account i've tried as well. Perhaps i can make a video showing whats happening, and well as the logs right after.

You're running a second instance of FG on the same computer as the GM, and you join that GM instance via the cloud? If so, you're very lucky and this probably won't last for long.

Other's reading this - the correct way to connect when using a second instance on the same computer as the GM instance, is to "Join Campaign" putting localhost as the <IP Address> entry in the "Join By IP and Port" section.

Okay... seems like the way to test would be to go through the cloud server and it's been working fine that way. Can you tell me why what I'm doing is incorrect?

Because the way FG has always done second instance on the same computer connectivity is to use the localhost servername, as this is only valid on the same computer and so the FG code doesn't do a license check, allowing you to run two instances on the same computer (which use the same license).

Now, maybe in FGU they've changed this, or it's just a temporary oversight and will be rectified at some point. Even if they have changed the functionality, it is way more efficient to connect to localhost as this keeps all your second instance <-> GM communications on the same computer (not even going onto the LAN) rather then sending them up to the cloud and back down.

Plus, there's been a few issues that have worked fine on a second instance, but haven't worked on a second computer. So running via the cloud from the same computer and assuming it's the same as running from a different computer is not a correct assumption. And if you're doing so, you should give that information when reporting issues to ensure that the devs know exactly how you're testing.

Anyway, this really isn't helping any other people in this thread - my response about using localhost was to try to get people connected properly and in the most efficient way when running a second instance on the same computer as the GM instance.

Okay, I get that it's better if you just want to run a second instance. I just meant for the purposes of testing it might make sense to go through cloud since that's what the players do, that's all.

Please see my edited post above.

I understand where you're coming from regarding testing, but it's not ideal as a complete cloud testing process and certainly isn't really relevant to the issues being discussed in this thread. No harm, no foul. :)

@nvgispirits - thanks for the video.

It looks like there's a fairly common issue people are experiencing. I can't recreate with my testing on multiple PCs. But from the number of posts, it is obviously a bit more than an isolated issue. One thing I'm seeing is that it seems to be mostly users with a join date of this month (most, but not all) and others may be trying FGU for the first time. So maybe it's an issue with new installations of FGU or something else...

I'll leave this to the devs to follow up.

Gotcha. i will say, i seem to be able to connect to others on the join games list. However i can't seem to connect to my friend. We have even checked his registry to confirm it has the right license key and it does. I'm completely stumped lol. I appreciate the help though. hopefully my information will help you guys in some way.

Hi, Congrats on releasing Unity version!

I think it is still not entirely fixed, I still could not get player with free version to connect, I have FGU Ultimate license Monthly Sub,

Now we tried with FGU Standard License Sub and he is able to join, so we had to both subscribe, me Ultimate, he Standard,

Just letting you know, if there is difference between permanent license and subscription one, in this specific problem,

I got FGC ultimate on steam and waiting to buy with discount there :)

There's no difference between a sub and an outright purchase.

Are you and the player both running the most up to date version of Unity? Did the player enter their forum username and password into settings?

Yes, I was standing beside and watched it myself, very strange imo, new installs, same versions, forum user logged in and all, only action we took after several errors ("unauthorized copy or auth server is down"), just added standard license to his client

When did you try this? Because there was a fix on the FG server yesterday that resolved this issue for most people (referenced in my post #53 above).

Definitely after that, because yesterday it did not work for us, tried several times and then again after I saw your post, still was not working.
Then 10 hours later, after still receiving error, decided to give a try with standard license. So this happened in 30 min time period, before my first post.

Thanks for confirming.

Ask the players to open their console.log files immediately after getting the error. Click the folder icon in FG to open a file explorer window at the location of this file.

Then please post the contents of that file here.

I wouldn't rule it out, but usually if it says ultimate then it is.

The probably cause is due to some issue with the free/demo license communicating with the FG server to verify that the Ultimate license it's connecting to is valid. The standard license doesn't do this.

@Fanator19,

It's because you cancelled for FGU subscription. As noted in the FAQ for subscriptions, cancelling the subscription automatically cancels the license as well. It's a limitation of the Paypal interface that manages subscriptions.

Hopefully it's not bad forum etiquitte to post this long after the thread seems to have resolved, but I'm getting an issue where my dad has an Ultimate subscription and is hosting from one computer. I'm trying to join from my laptop on the same network. It's a cloud host, public with a password. I connect to the game, enter the password and get to 'Acquiring File List' and it stalls out.

On his end he see me join and immediately disconnect. You can see in the logs that I authenticate, connect and then almost immediately lose connection to matchmaking. Any ideas what is happening here?
