I have been dancing arounf FG for several years now resisting my urge to Buy It! for several reasons. Later this year I might be reconsidering ... again.

So what would I need/what can I do in the following situation:

We play in person at my home, six players and me as GM
We'll play bog-standard D&D 5e, using one of the commercially avaliable adventures
Character options will be limited to PHB only
I'd use a laptop at the game table plus a TV set for displaying stuff
Character creation and management should be using FG, doing it at my place instead of online isn't a problem
I'd like two run two instances of FG, one for me with all GM info, the other for the players with restricted info
We all love rolling dice, so FG should ask for the die roll and handle the rest

What would we need to add to this setup to enable a player out of town to join our game?

If you have an Ultimate FG license then all that the out of town player would need is the demo client. If you have standard licence they would need a stanard license too.

Otherwise there would be no other requirements.

For your players to create characters using the PHB, you'd want to purchase the PHB. You'd also likely want to purchase the DMG and whatever official module that you are running.

But for the first setup, doing tabeltop with all players at my place, a standard license would suffice?

Yes, a standard license I'd all you need for your setup. You can run two instances of FG on the same computer, one for DM on the laptop screen and one on your tv or second display for players to see the player map.

For manual die rolls, you just need to turn on the option.

The PHB is optional, but highly recommended. You will want the adventure, but technically it is optional.

How do you envisage this process in your group? Exactly what are you planning on creating and managing in FG? Are you planning on having another computer locally that connects to the GM for the players to share and input/change data? Or are you relying on the GM doing all the PC updates in FG?

Well... I don't plan to computerise the whole gam, so my laptop with two instances running and me making all the input will be the way to go. It isn' the most elegant solution but a way I think my players might be comfortable with. At least I hope that handling the input for the wholue group isn't too much of a hustle. What's more, I'm pretty confident that I'm a dextrous handler of computer input devices. :bandit:

As the license question is answered (thanks for that!), the next one follows.

Is it possible to localize the game elements like spell and wepaon names and so on? Not all of my players are so comfortable with the English language, so we use the German versions of the rulebooks. Even with me handling the stoff on screen it would be nice to have FG display the translated tems for them. If the stinrgs would be stored in sopme XML-file it wouldbe perfect...

This may be of interest then. (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27202-LanguagePak-(LPak)-Community-Project-Program)

Due to the Corona crisis we have decided to suspend our campaign and test some VTT gaming for the time being. This means, of cause, that the original plan for FG being an extension of our one game table went to hell.

So I'd like to start out with the Ultimate subscription for my machine and the players downloading the demo/free version.

I'll buy the Lost Mine of Phandelver set too. If I understood correctly, this would be sufficient for five players to play, right?

And the only way to include a sixth player would be to buy the Players' Handbook? Not because of some limit in functionality but because LMoP-module doens't include the data for additional characters.

When his test-run works well and is appreciated by my players, I'll likely get more stuff, but would wait for the next Steam sale.

Oh, by the way: in which way does it matter wether I buy the stuff directly from the FG site or from Steam? I gues I can mix items from both sources at my leisure?

You can have two fighters or two clerics etc.
You can import the pregens a second time and rename them.
Or make new pregens just using the SRD (or Basic rules).

You can buy from either source but you should stick with one source.
All sales are replicated across both sources.

The main reason to buy from Steam is if you get better regional pricing than buying from the FG store in US Dollars.

If you buy from the FG Store FG, and the community developer who made the product in FG, get more money. Steam take quite a sizable chunk of purchases.

The reason you should buy from one location is because in the future if you want to complete one of the bundles for a discount, all your purchases for that bundle will need to be from one store.

Ah, I see! So there's no reason not to buy a susbscription from FG directly and the data from Steam.

Anyway, thank you very much for your help - for now! :D As my players have decided to spend the Corno Crisis roleplaying with FG, I'll take the plunge in the evening. And this is sure to generate questions, and more questions.
