View Full Version : Interest Check:VTA Based Online Convention

An idea popped up on our forum and thus I am wondering what the community's response to this is. Would you like to see us put together a small, maybe 2 or 3 days) online convention? I would say showcasing FG, MT, BG and any other VTA that would like in on this and whatever games people would like to run. I already have a few people on board to either run games or willing to be interviewed for podcasts.

We would need a bunch of GM/DMs to sign up to run some one-shot adventures and then the player base to support those games. Since this would be a small, and just getting off the ground sort of thing, I don't know where this could lead or if we could get sponsors or anything, but we will see what the response is.

SO, that said, would anyone be interested in seeing this happen? I know there was one a few years ago, I did not participate in it nor do I know how well it went over, but as far as I know this would be the first VTA based online convention. I figure if we could get a few good people together for this first, work out some of the kinks, perhaps we could make it an annual thing.

Thoughts?

Real life depending, I'd be willing to play in a few games. Maybe I can finally get into one with Ilwan. :)

Itae Orcae...

Yes. Count me in, I would love to GM for something like this...
*considers what systems to run*

Have a semi-finished ArsMagica module...
And might be able to slap up something for Gurps... I know a VERY nice nasty and dark adventure set under WW II for that which works wonders in scaring people.

If I am finished or... closer to finished, I might even voulenteer to run a D6 StarWars variant.

I'd love to play ArsMagica so I can figure out how the heck to build and play my character in that play by post thing we are growning. :)

Well, I have to say that everyone that I have spoken to about this has had nothing but very enthusiastic responses to this. So at this point I am very interested in trying to set this up, I am still working on getting some key people involved in this, but at the moment, things are sure looking promising.

I would definitely be interested in this as well. Depending on RL commitments I would be willing to help out anyway I could.

Will leave a server up for ArsMagica at "good dice huge roll" (Yes, I had to refresh QUITE a few times to get that one. :) )

If I see yer in, I will help you create your char in 5th ed.

I'm up for running something - I kinda fancy something different: Imperium Romanum or SciFi or Japanese.

I have really gotten some good vibes from others on this, and am working on laying the foundation and structure for this.

If you have ideas, thought on how to make this better, what you would like to see etc, please post either here, or here:

Just a quick update on this. iCon is definitely going to happen. From the feedback I have gotten from others in the industry is amazing and we have people signing up to do interviews, demonstrations, prizes, contests and run games.
We should have an official release, as well as projected events soon.

ARM is a Go.
Working on a small adventure set during 5th crusade, should be something for players to bite on. :)

The list is starting to grow, so I thought it might be good to put up a list of official sponsors for iCon. Date has been officially set as March 23rd & 24th.

The following vendors have all signed up as official sponsors and to offer copies of their products as prizes at iCon:
Battlegrounds: RPG Edition (https://www.battlegroundsgames.com/)
Fantasy Grounds (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/)
RPTools.net (MapTools) (https://rptools.net/doku.php)
ViewingDale (https://www.viewingdale.com/)
d20Pro (https://www.d20pro.com/)

Also signed up for interviews concerning their products/development:
Battlegrounds: RPG Edition (https://www.battlegroundsgames.com/)
RPTools.net (MapTools) (https://rptools.net/doku.php)
ViewingDale (https://www.viewingdale.com/)
d20Pro (https://www.d20pro.com/)
James D. Hargrove with his rules-lite RPG System Simple20 (https://miscellaneousdebris.sitesled.com/gamewiki.html)
Daan from Redblade (https://www.redblade.org/)
Robin V. Stacey aka Greywulf with his rules-lite d20 RPG System Microlite20 (https://wiki.greywulf.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/Macropedia/Microlite20)

As it stands now, this list is not complete, as we have allot of other company/people in the works that we are in talks with. I expect this list to grow some in the near future.

How hard should we push this? Shall I start a thread on EnWorld with a link here? Wait till it is closer to happening?

If you start a thread on ENWorld (good idea, btw), consider linking instead to the iCon subforum on the FUM site (https://www.fouruglymonsters.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=64), since that seems to get more regular updates and info posted.

Has anyone posted about iCon on RPGnet, yet?

He he ... since I am already a Webmaster at Dundjinni and now one of the four FUMs, that part is taken care of. Unfortunately I still have to hear from Mindy herself. The other moderators and webmaster are eager to help out though ;)

Thank you for all the support guys, I have been pretty sick the last two weeks and hardly been able to sit upright to work at a computer, hoping this next week to really get back into it and get the iCon site finished up.

Glad to see you are feeling good enought it sit upright and post! :)

2 things before I post on Enworld. Should I give a contact for you or just links to the message boards good enought?

And I don't think I'll put the link to FUM as I've tried to link to there in the past but you have to be a member to see the messages. Is that still true? I don't think that will work well for Enworld.

Sinkle, if you post an updated list of events/sponsers I'll update the thread and give it a little bump.

LOL Well hopefully soon I will have the web page finished with the official announced sponsors (which is pretty impressive if I do say so myself), then we can post a link to it and perhaps that will drum up interest.

I posted on En forums a little bit to bump it as well. ;-)

I probably could, though as I am a prime coordinator of the con, I am not sure how much time I will have leading up to it...will have to see.

BIG UPDATE!

Just wanted to let you all know today we got notice today from two great companies in the VGT and RPG world on their support of iCon:

Malhavoc Press - I am sure you all know who they are, here is the details from their site:
Malhavoc Press is the publisher of the award-winning Book of Eldritch Might, Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved, and other d20 System roleplaying game titles. Hallmarks of Malhavoc products include unusual magic, monsters, and evocative game elements that go beyond traditional fantasy, as well as a mastery of the d20 System rules.
Digital Adventures - Kevin's excellent company that produces some of the best products for Fantasy Grounds, including many titles from Malhavoc Press's library.

Thank you to them and their support in our efforts to get iCon off the ground and make it a success, adding their names to our sponsor list definitely ups the ante a little!

Another publisher has signed up to support iCon, Joseph Browning let me know that his company Expeditious Retreat Press has agreed to support iCon with a few products to be given away as prizes to participants.

Be sure to check out their line of products at: Expeditious Retreat Press (https://www.xrpshop.citymax.com/)

On another note, the official site is now up and live.

Big News!!

The people behind Dundjinni have offered to provide us with a few copies of their program and an art pack to be given away as prizes for iCon! They have also agreed to an interview! Kudos to them and Kepli for helping us out with this.

Dundjinni (www.dunjinni.com): (www.dunjinni.com) Dundjinni is a full-featured fantasy map creation program. It allows users to create walls and floors, place objects, insert text, and more. It boasts an intuitive interface and an impressive selection of objects and textures (over 190 images). It also allows you to author d20 adventures in a simple yet elegant way. Available for both PC & Mac.

Neat program. Not as capable of really polished maps as the high-dollar options like Photoshop and Firewerks (sp?) but it is really easy to use. As a total hack, I can put together nice maps for a session in an hour or so.

I'm gonna post the link to this on an online site I play on, but I have a question:

What about the folks who do not have the programs? How are they going to participate in the games, etc? Or is this an uber sneaky way to get people to purchase the program :b

heruca
January 26th, 2007, 18:15
Many of the programs are free, and many of the commercial programs will offer a version of the software that will be free to use for the duration of iCon.

Snikle
January 26th, 2007, 18:20
Yes, additionally, we are working to get a sort of screencasting support worked in so if you did not want to install a demo, you could choose instead to watch a semi-live casting of a game in progress.

But of course, this a convention, so it is an uber sneaky way to get you to TRY the various VGTs out there, and select the one that works best for you and your group.

Just wanted to post an update for those of you who might be interested in iCon. Here is an updated schedule for the convention happenings over the next couple of weeks:

15 Feb - Open Registration - We plan on opening registration to everyone on the 15th of February.
1 Mar - Games/Demos Forum - Beginning 1 March, people registered will have access to the Games/Demos Forum, allowing them to sign up for games and chat with those running them.
10 March - Vendor Forum - This will be open to allow you to chat with developers, answer questions, find out what you need to run games, and learn more about the Virtual Game Table applications.
16 Mar - Contests - Provide upload ability to all participants, on the 24th we will open polls on the forum for each entry and allow visitors to vote on the ones they like best.
22 March - General Discussion (the Lobby) - This will allow direct communications for all involved. We will also be hosting an IRC chat room "Lobby" (services provided by Serenity IRC!) so that there will be 'live' interaction at the convention, I am expecting many of the developers and vendors to be hanging out in the chat room and on the forum, so that you can chat with them directly!
