In the case of Fantasy Grounds, to play you need only the DEMO software and a DM with the Fantasy Grounds Ultimate (or standard I guess) license.

Im also looking for a group. New to FG and everything is somewhat overwhelming. Not even sure where to start.

Also check out Fantasygroundscollege.net. They don't often run games, but they have lots of learning resources and free classes to help you learn not only FG, but how to play D&D too.
