View Full Version : FGU won't install correctly. No EXE, updater crashes

Edit 2/16/2020:

Resolved in post #44 (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?53727-FGU-won-t-install-correctly-No-EXE-updater-crashes&p=476449&viewfull=1#post476449) by using a different installer. At time of writing if you receive the same error mentioned below, try the "previous installer":
MODERATOR: Removed old installer link. Please download from donwloads section on front page of web site

(I suspect a new installer will be released at the official URL soon).

Original post:

I backed FGU with the Veteran + Ultimate upgrade and have a key and everything. Wanted to try it out today. I downloaded the windows version from "FGU Playtest - Overview and Download" and noted the "FGU Playtest - Known Items". Seemed fine.

I installed to the default directory. After install it opened the updater which briefly showed a window (see attached) but that closed shortly after. I don't think it did anything. I tried running the updater again and it did the same. I tried installing to a new folder and had the same problem.

The update log just says:

ARGS:
CheckNewUpdater(): False
Launch C:\Program Files\Fantasy Grounds Unity\FGUpdaterEngine\FGUpdaterEngine.exe

I notice that during the installer after "Create start menu shortcuts" and clicking yes, but before closing the installer, it creates shortcuts in the start menu for: FantasyGrounds, FantasyGroundsUpdater, Uninstall. The link to FantasyGrounds is broken and "FantasyGrounds.exe" does not exist. After closing the installer that shortcut gets removed from my start menu.

The FGU uninstall link looks like it opens the updater, but it actually stays open for a few seconds. I can click on Settings and I can see the Username / Password field, but then it crashes after a second. When doing this the log file looks the same as above except the ARGS includes "-uninstall". Would post a video but have had problems with links on this forum before, and can't attach mp4s.

Is that unity version up to date with all the updates that have been posted to Kickstarter? I feel like I'm using the wrong version but it's the only one referenced on this forum.

It's also not clear if this project is still in alpha or beta, but the latest post talked about release on steam. It's been hard to follow this project.

Thanks

I have this same issue, with the same lines in the log as above. I've tried launching multiple times, but when i do, the window shows up for a few moments before crashing out.

Try running the FGUpdater directly from the install folder.

Try running the FGUpdater directly from the install folder.

I've already tried this and it produces the same issue.

I have exactly the same issue. Tried it a couple of minutes ago for the first (and then 2nd and 3rd time to be sure) and get the above-mentioned result. Install is fine, but after the 'Update' window appears, it is very slow and closes on its own after a few seconds with nothing else happening. If I click on the shortcut, it can't find anything. If I run the updater from the folder, either nothing at all happens, or the window disappears again as before.

Dunno if this is much help, but i attached a debugger to the FGUpdaterEnginer.exe, and here's the logs that were caught by the debugger. A decent amount of these errors is probably due to not having a debug build, but its the full log up until the updater crashes out.

https://pastebin.com/gbP8EBtb

Also, another thing i will note, when installing the software, when attempting to install the VC redistributable, the VC fails with an "already installed" error. Don't know if this relates to this in any way.

Have both of you checked your security software to make sure that FG was not quarantined or blacklisted?

Not blocked by windows defender or windows firewall. No warnings appeared. No extra security software is installed. Tried running as admin, and installing on a separate drive with a separate data directory.

I get a few errors in the Event Viewer, but these are usually not helpful:

I'm using windows security, but nothing has popped up just like in the above. I added an explicit exclusion for the entire folder and no change

I also checked my windows event viewer while i was at it

The 0xc000005 exception code usually indicates that the file is not a correct executable file to run on Windows. We have usually seen this when security software quarantines or blocks the file from being written correctly to disk.

I would check your security software first (Norton, McAfee, Avast, MalwareBytes, etc.) to see if something has quarantined the software. From there, you can try re-installing with the latest installer from the original download link.

I have had that issue before for other programs. Usually you can right-click > properties, and at the bottom there will be a security notice with an "Unblock" button. But I'm not getting that with the installer or updater. Again, no security software other than Windows built-in stuff and I checked the logs there. Nothing is being blocked. :/

Thanks for the tips so far, still stuck though

Did you want us to re-download the installer?

-re-downloaded the FGUWebinstall
-deleted the smiteworks folder
-ran the new installer

-got the same results.

No exe and the updates stops responding and crashes.

@PaganBlack,

Are you sure that you don't have some security software that is quarantining the software while it's trying to run? When executable files "disappear", it often is caused by security software quarantining those software files.

If it was just happening on mine, i might go that route but this is happening to a few people. I’m having this happen in 2 different computers. One on my laptop and the other on my friends computer.

Re-downloaded the installer
Deleted the smiteworks folder
Ran the installer
The updater launches, i see a green bar and part of a blue bar with no text in the window, then crashes.

Apologies for the upheaval. We're trying to work out a few installer issues, and going through some challenges in getting some of the "prerequisite" steps cleaned up. I need our developer, Ryan, to reach out to ask for the details he needs; but he is on Central US time so off already. I've asked him to jump in this thread, and provide more detail on what he needs to resolve.

In the mean time, I've put the latest build of the installer at the original download link.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe

And, I've put the previous working build of the installer at this download link.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstallPrev.exe

When providing feedback on installation/updater issues; please clarify whether the issue you are having is with the installer (i.e. before the FG updater launches) or with the updater program itself. They are two completely different applications, so we need to make sure we're looking at the right one.

I ran into this today too. I think the problem is that the new installer isnt doing credential check first; it skipped that step entirely and the window showed "unknown" where my username should be.

The previous installer worked ok for me.

I having the same issue with this exe as before (same as others)

And, I've put the previous working build of the installer at this download link.

After running this, and then running the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe file from the Program Files folder I created, it seems to run fine (doesn't hang or crash and is installing now)

Based on the above, the issue is with the FGUWebInstall.exe? (Even though it's the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe that hangs/crashes)

EDIT: Also possibly related is that the Updater (currently running) says V4.0.0 at the top right. Before (when it was hanging/crashing) it said v0.33

Also what I saw. Was 0.33, then when functional 4.0.0.

When providing feedback on installation/updater issues; please clarify whether the issue you are having is with the installer (i.e. before the FG updater launches) or with the updater program itself. They are two completely different applications, so we need to make sure we're looking at the right one.

Using FGWebInstallPrev.exe seems to have worked for me as well.

For troubleshooting: The issue with the previous one was that it would freeze and crash when running FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe. It would crash after about 20-ish seconds. it also did NOT load any information in the popup window (the one that says "welcome to fantasy grounds"), and the whole update would run excessively laggy. Running the FGUWebInstall.exe seems to run without issues.

I am also having the same issue. interestingly enough, if I am really quick, I can access the settings while it is loading and almost have enough time to paste my license key but have not been able to.
The previous updater works fine.

Hey guys, Ryan here.
I've been trying to investigate this issue, but I've only got theories about the issue at the moment.

Could someone who's had trouble with the current FGUWebInstall.exe please try running FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe and check for a log in your data folder and send it along?
Default location is C:\Users\(USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\SmiteWorks\Fan tasy Grounds\FGUpdaterEngine.log

It may be useful if you attach the log in the Program folder for me as well
Default there is C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe

Thanks for your help folks, trying to sort this out for you.

Just been trying to install FGU on a laptop using the installer linked in the sticky- ran into exactly the same issues as the rest of you. I already had a copy of FGU successfully installed on my main desktop PC which must have used the previous installer. I can also confirm that reverting to the old installer link from this thread allowed me to get FGU installed and linked to my account successfully on this laptop now thanks so definitely an issue with the installer not the PC.

In terms of fixing the new installer, I have attached the log file present in the program directory referenced above, but there is no log file being created by the defective installer in the data folder. I should mention am running Win 10 Home 64bit. The first time I ran the non-functioning installer I did get a windows notification to run an app crashing troubleshooter. This reported my temp internet folder was not in the default location and advised me to reset it to the default. I did this but it did not change the behaviour of the installer. The other odd behaviour was trying to uninstall via the remove programs dialog just resulted in repeatedly producing the installer splash screen, complete with partially filled blue bar and displaying version 0.3, but would not actually uninstall the program- I resorted to manually deleting the smiteworks directory which required admin privileges, then running the old installer. FGU now up and running, showing version 4.0 ultimate.

I installed FGU using a previously d/l FGUwebinstaller on a clean Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.18363 Build 18363. The installer said I need to install Microsoft Visual C++ and after allowing the install the FGUupdater opened but looked strange 31619, but closed after a few moments. When I tried to open FGU using the desktop link I received a message saying the FGU.exe was missing. I ran the FGupdater from the FG folder but the same window was displayed but the FG .exe was still missing.

Today I d/l the new installer using the link you provided. I attempted to uninstall FGU using windows "add/remove programs" but it was never successful uninstalling FGU. I then manually deleted the FG folders from the Programs folder and User folder. I ran the new installer and attempted to load the run FGU but the same missing FG .exe msg was displayed. I then ran the FG updater manually and received the same odd FGU updater window shown above. I attempted to run FGU, but I again received the missing FGU .exe error msg.

Pretty much same issue (minus C++ install) that I had as detailed above. You need to use the old installer https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstallPrev.exe linked by Moon Wizard earlier in this post until they figure out what is broken in the current version. At least the old installer should get you up and running. I'm not really sure what the new installer was bringing to the party anyway to be honest but there is presumably some sort of advantage to it once its been debugged!

ARGS:
CheckNewUpdater(): False

Hey Ryan, I missed this message before my last post which just said the latest installer had the same issue. Sorry for ignoring your request for the logs. I'll go through this again for you.

1. I located both folders you mentioned and renamed them, then followed the steps while installing FGU to a new folder.

2. I downloaded from the link Moon Wizard posted (comment #32) from https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe

3. I installed to: "C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU" and the data to "C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU\FGU Data".

4. I chose to create the start menu and desktop shortcuts. After install it opened the updater which crashed as usual.

5. The resulting folder looked like this: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/cad965/explorer and that data folder looks like: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/9fd3f4/explorer

Note that FantasyGrounds.exe is missing

It did NOT create a new appdata/roaming folder: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/74d0f6/explorer

It did NOT create a new program files folder: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/920f11/explorer

It did NOT create a log file in the new install directory.

9. I tried running the FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe from that new install directory. It still crashed, but this time it DID create a log file. Nothing useful though: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/334d4b/

No luck with that version, but see below

When providing feedback on installation/updater issues; please clarify whether the issue you are having is with the installer (i.e. before the FG updater launches) or with the updater program itself. They are two completely different applications, so we need to make sure we're looking at the right one.

To be clear the entire time the updater program is the one crashing. The installer appears to work but as I noted in the original post, it seems that a couple executables were not getting created.

In the mean time, I've put the latest build of the installer at the original download link.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe

That link is the same as the above that I walked through for Ryan, so refer to the above

And, I've put the previous working build of the installer at this download link.
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstallPrev.exe

I did not try this previous version and assumed it was the same installer I used to begin with. I gave this a try though, same as all other attempts:

1. I downloaded the file from https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstallPrev.exe

2. I installed to C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU2 and data to C:\Users\Radley\Documents\deletethese\FGU2\FGU Data, and created both shortcuts

3. I notice after installing and clicking the close button, it did not automatically open the updater. Or if it did, it didn't create a window. Other versions create a window that crashes after 2 seconds. No appdata folder was created.

4. The install folder now looks like this: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/3d15d7/explorer - note there is no log file

5. This installer actually appears to be working and shows version v4.0.0 which is different than my first attempt which showed v0.33: https://radleysustaire.com/s3/6a0524/fgupdaterengine

6. I was able to add my license key (although it claimed it was invalid) and my login credentials, save and restart.

It looks like the "previous" installer is working!

Although the "previous" installer has a different version number (v4.0.0) from the first one I used (v0.33) before it crashed. See first post for that.

I am successfully updating now. It still says my license key is invalid, but that's a different issue.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks everyone for the detailed info.

So, what I know so far/what I can tell you. I'll be a bit verbose on the functionality of the app so people can see what's going on in the background here.

First, the latest installer changes are really only meant to prompt installation of the Visual C++ redistributable for users who don't have an appropriate version installed. That's the reason for the installer size change, and the prompting seems to be mostly working.
We also added an error for users trying to run the installer on a 32 bit machine. These are really the only changes made recently to the installer, but it's possible something about the logic is a problem.

As for FantasyGrounds.exe not existing after install: This is as intended. To keep the installer size down (and since almost always, Fantasy Grounds will have to immediately update anyway, since we make frequent changes), we don't actually include Fantasy Grounds in the installer.

The installer should really only be including the updater.
The updater itself is actually 2 programs: FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe (.app for mac), and FGUpdaterEngine.
FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe primarily exists to request admin permission for access to the program files directory (still asks even if you don't install to PF), and then it launches FGUpdaterEngine/FGUpdaterEngine.exe (which is a Unity app)/

If FGUpdaterEngine has an update for the updater, then it is meant to write those files to FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW, back up FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe to FantasyGroundsUpdater_OLD.exe, which then copies all the new updater files. By the time the updater is updated and we are back in the main updater application (FGUpdaterEngine), it should be clearing out both the FantasyGroundsUpdater_NEW folder and FantasyGroundsUpdater_OLD.exe

Now, as for why we're seeing these strange updater bugs. The v0.33 is an indication that the bulk of the updater code is not hit (since that 4.0.0 is updated programatically quite early).
Being that the app is crashing before any of this is updating, it seems that *Something* that the Unity needs is not being installed correctly for some users.

For this, I think we need to introduce one more log file, especially since this seems to only be some users.
There is a Unity created log file located at
C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\SmiteWorks\FGUp daterEngine\Player.log

Edited:
I'd appreciate it if someone with the crashing issue could email their player log to [email protected] for me to review. Hopefully this should give us information about the missing files, or whatever else might be going on here.

I did see that installer pop up on my first attempts, but not the updated installers. It would ask me to install and then the options in VC++ only gave me "Repair" or "Cancel" because it was already installed. I think that's installed by default in Windows 10 now anyway? It does not pop up anymore so I think that's fixed.

Hi Ryan, I tried your installer in a new folder again. It did not open the updater immediately after install, not sure if that is a bug or intended. I ran "FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe" manually from the install path, and it opened the v4.0.0 version. I think this one is working, too, other than not automatically updating after install.

The first part is still a bug. The updater *should* open immediately after install completes, but this is one I can't reproduce, so I've been trying things to see if they work so far.
The only idea I have for even testing/getting more info on this is:
1: Install to an empty folder
2: If the updater doesn't open, check the install folder for FantasyGroundsUpdater.log

This would at least tell me if at least the first program ran, and may contain clues to why the second/main FGUpdaterEngine didn't open.
Or if the Log doesn't exist, it would tell me that the installer couldn't find the installed program on the post-install step.

As to why it doesn't automatically start updating when you open the app:
This is currently as intended. The updater only begins updating automatically when passed a specific argument. The installer doesn't pass this argument because generally the first time people install, they have to login and enter their keys.

With the Current Installer (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe), were you prompted with the Visual C++ Redistributable? If you were, did it install properly or did you have another issue with it?

Did the updater open after the install process or not? If not, did it open after running from the folder?

When did you download the current installer? We posted a new version to the same link on Monday, so if by chance you downloaded it any time before then, you may not have the most recent version.

I tried to run a one-shot in FGU last night and we all had issues with the updater. 2 of us were able to get it running after the whole: Update launcher, it closes... doesn't reopen... run FGUUpdaterPrev.exe (I forget the exact name). 2 Players were unable to get it to update and therefore weren't able to connect to my game. I don't think they were seeing an error code or anything, but I've asked them to try to document another attempt to update over the weekend and will report anything we all find.

No prompt for C++ redistributable.
The updater did open after the install (Meaning the successful install with the Prev.exe). I did not have to run it from the directory.
I downloaded it yesterday (Feb 20th around 2-ish EST).

I uninstalled. The Smitework directory still exists but it is empty.
I reinstalled with the link you have in post #53
The install went ok. No request for c++ redist. After shortcut creation, clicked close, asked me to run updater.
Note: Remember to click settings and ensure you are logged in before clicking update!
Clicked update, update ran.
I can send you the log if you want it. I did see this in it though. Not sure if it's useful or not.

e: FileMoveSafe - Could not move file: System.IO.IOException: Sharing violation on path C:\Users\mohda\AppData\Roaming\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\vault\PZOSMWPZO40152FG.dat.tmp
