View Full Version : Ref-manual search/keywords "bug"

Tonight I noticed some inconsistent behavior with searches on a reference manual... I thought it might just be mine but then I tested the same thing on the 5E DMG.

Here is how to reproduce the issue. Open the reference manual, do NOT toggle open any chapters. Since the DMG only has one chapter (and the rest are sub-chapters) do not click on "D&D Dungeon Masters Guide"

Now type in something you KNOW is in the DMG. In this case I was typing "poison". When I do that I get a empty ref-manual.

Now, close the reference manual, reopen and open up the first chapter.

Again run your search of whatever you picked, I used poison again. This time I got a complete list of entries that the keywords fields had poison in.

I noticed this issue with the AD&D DMG reference manual a little more easily because I use chapters more than the 5E books did. The only way I could get an accurate "search" was to toggle all the chapters "opened" and then search.

This has always been the way...

In FGC? That's not true. I just double checked and w/o opening a single chapter I was able to use the search feature and get lots of hits. Now that I test tho it certainly is less "hits" that it should be. Using the "+" button to open all chapters/sub-chapters and enter the same search I get a lot more hits.

In anycase in FGU, I get 0 search hits w/o opening chapters. This would seem to be a bug that should be corrected in FGU so it works w/o having to open all the chapters.

I've said this multiple times and y'all keep saying "no no that isn't true!" See? It's true! :)

Purely theory on my part but I suspect that simply calling up the refmanual window doesn't actually load the keywords into memory, only expanding the navbar (that's usually why I suggest the +/- button quickly) or any other method to get refpage(s) to render appears to do the trick.

I'm pretty sure your assumption is mostly correct in that I don't think "keywords" are loaded unless the chapter is opened. For sure this is an issue in FGU since I get 0 hits w/o doing that.

As I mentioned before its not, I get multiple hits w/o opening chapters in FGC, even tho it's not ALL it should. I get 0 hits in FGU.

I'll say it again tho, this should be fixed regardless how it works in FGC because it's buggy there also (unless you open the chapters you dont get ALL the hits, but you do get some).

This is what I get if I search an unopened DMG for poison in FGC.

FGU:

In both cases it's bugged. This is what it should look like. Page and a half of hits after opening all chapters (FGU).

No one is arguing that it shouldnt be fixed.
We are all just pointing out its a reference manual bug and its not limited to FGU.
