View Full Version : Connect to your own server?

Allmight

I read somewhere that you should be able to connect to your own server with a second instance of FGU running, either on your own machine or on two seperate machines, using the same license, like you can do in FGC. I have tried this and it connects allright, but as soon as it start to sync content to client it aborts back out to the menu again. Am i doing anything wrong or have i misunderstood it all and you can't connect to yourself?

I know that networking is'nt the focus atm, but i want to log in to se the player version of the maps i am working on, test out the LOS from the player perspective.

I have tried to connect to other servers in the lobby, and that works just fine.

Yes, i have open the 1802 port in my local firewall (on FGU server side), and i have port forwarded the port in my router as well, so that should not be the issue.

STEPS TAKEN

1. Start FGU server (tried both local and cloud, public and private) and load up my campaign.
2a. Start a new instance of FGU on same computer
2b. Start a FGU (same license and account) on another machine
3. Connect to my server (using either name or IP address, tried both local and WAN address)
4. Connected to server and sync of data starts (bar appears)
5. Before any progress on the download happens, i get booted back to main menu on the client.

As mentioned earlier, this kind of connecting to your own server with same license works just fine on FGC, and i am almost certain i read in some other forum post that it should also be possible in FGU Beta.

EDIT
FOUND THE PROBLEM

I have found the problem as to why i could not connect.

Seems like the network code/protocol does'nt like Unicode characters. My campaign had a Swedish character in the campaign name, but as soon as i suspected that was the problem i made a new campaign with the same name, but switched the swedish character to an UTF-8 counterpart, and lo and behold, now i can connect just fine.

Old Name: Lördags Kampanjen (does not work)
New Name: Lordags Kampanjen (does work)

Also tested the following after that...

Lämmeltåget (does not work)
Lammeltaget (does work)

I tested this using the Pathfinder 2 ruleset, using a Local Private server, connecting to localhost.

You can't run two instances of FG with the same license details at the same time.

Start a second instance of FG on the same computer and use localhost to join the first instance.

I have tried that. All that happens is that i connect, then it starts to acquring the file list (the download bar), then i get "File download complete" without the download bar moving, and a second later i get booted back to the main display on FGU. I am still hanging on the server as connected. So if i try to connect again, i get disconnected on the server and nothing happens on the client. If i then abort on the client the console window pops up with an error. I'll pass along the console log below just in case.

This is the log after a couple of tries, retries with subsequent cancel due to no connection. Rince and repeat.

Where do you put "localhost"? In the "Join By IP and Port" box? When I try this, it gets stuck at "Acquiring file list."

You put it in the IP box.

You put it in the IP box.

Yes, and everything seems to work until i get booted back to the FGU start menu. I will try to reinstall to see if that helps. And i read somewhere that multiple network cards can cause some issues. I have a virtual one (Hyper-V), but i tried to disable it without any posetive result. Will do some more testing.

I've managed to connect via localhost on my desktop PC - it just took an incredbily long time. However, it won't load any of my purchases. I've successfully logged in under Settings, and then run the updater, which says "Found 5 purchases" - but when it finishes updating and I launch FG, only the demo stuff is available.

Fantasy Grounds Unity states "Unable to connect to host - Unable to start cloud game server. A server is already registered to your user name".

I do not know of any server with my user name. If this is the case though, how do I connect to such server?

Thanks for any assistance which can be offered.

I believe this is a known issue, where the available games needs to be cleaned up.

Try starting a non-cloud game and use a different campaign name.

Thats how I do it, opening it twice is correct.
I did noticed when you join however there is a IP displayed Mine does not.
It looks like the joining FGU is trying to join to a sever outside

In the join by IP address you should type 'localhost' without the quotes. I too find it strange that you have an IP address in that box already since it shouldn't show anything. You do have the host session actually running and in a campaign waiting for players to join right?

Edit: Hang on a minute you are using the demo version. I don't think you can host a game using the demo version.

Moon Wizard

Demo versions can not host games. They will only load the campaign; networking is disabled.

Assuming this is on the same computer?

If so, then use Server Type = LAN, Server List = Private for the campaign. Then the player should enter localhost in the "Join by IP and Port" entry.

Make sure to hit Start on the host screen and wait for the game to fully load the campaign before trying to Join.

I have a similar issue. I also am trying to connect to myself. So Ill list the steps i take.
1. Made a new campaign. Called it "Tomb"
2. Made it public on the cloud, made it have a password. Was just a three letter password nothing with strange letters or symbols.
3. Typed in a gm name.
4. Have 2 themes running 5e Theme - Wizards and Tomb of Annihilation.
5. Lobby always says not connected on load. I switch to join campaign screen, then back to host. Says im connected doing that.
6. Launch the campaign.
7. Pop open another instance of Fgu and try to find my game in the join screen. My game does not show up ever.
8. I try to connect using my iP, username, And even localhost. Nothing works just stuck on the screen that says "Attempting direct connection to server" Give it like 15 mins still nothing for each setting.
9. Try to make the game private and lan. Run step 7 and 8 again. (do to this thread recommendations.) Same exact result NOTHING happens.

How do i get my games that are public to work and show on the list? And how do i connect to myself?

Btw i have and run fgc every Sunday. The port is the same. So im pretty sure its not the problem.

Can you guys open the console before you connect to see if there is any additional information there when trying to self-connect? It's the button in upper left on launch screen. Also, please let me know if this is Mac/Windows; and what country/region you are connecting from; and whether you are on home internet, mobile or something else?

I am also having a similar problem. My window 10 machine can host and run as a demo player.
Computers from outside the network can also connect without issue.
But running an instance on a different win10 computer sits on Attempting Direct connection forever (used both internal and external IP, and GM Name). My game also does not show up on the list for this computer. Most of the time the list doesn't even show up. Uninstalled and re-installed several times.
Nothing additional in console.log.
I'm at a loss, any ideas?
