View Full Version : Parallels?

Has anyone had success on getting FGU to load and open in Parallels? I have Windows 10 running on Parallels on my MacBook. FGC worked great, but I’ve had zero success with FGU.

I installed and can open/run in Parallels. I didn't have any issues. I have not had an opportunity to host or Join yet.

Mine appeared to have installed smoothly as well. It is the hosting and joining that is not working.

Aventhar

In that case I will probably have problems as well. Damn. I’ll post here if I get it working. Probably something in the Parallels networking configuration.

You may need to change the network mode to Bridged. Then your virtual machine in Parallels will get a normal IP address on your network, rather than Parallels acting as another NAT router.

daggerfortysix

It is already in bridge mode as that was also necessary fro FGC to work. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I apologize for posting this error message in this thread as well as in the other thread about hosting or joining a game, I am just trying to rule out Parallels installations as the cause as there has been no solution posted as of yet. I understand the crew is very busy with multiple issues and are doing their best to triage.

Ok, I've seen on another thread that people using parallels have gotten FGU to work so I can rule this out...

Hi there, I'm currently trying to use FGU in Parallels, but it does not work. I searched in many threads without success.

Can you point me in the right direction?

I'm using Catalina.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the FG forums.

Can you provide some more information about what isn't working?

Hello, thanks for the reply!

While using Parallels, I installed the beta from the kickstarter link, and after I load the updater, I enter my ultimate key and my login informations. It says connection successful.

After I return to the first updater screen, I press update, and it says error, retrying in 10 seconds. Forever.

I tried changing my password, without ay success.

I tried the bridge thing in Parallels, but I'm not sure if there are any other steps I should do, as I can't connect to my wifi router, it says already connected by Ethernet.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Make sure that the bridged network is set to the correct device. According to Parallels:

Bridged: Ethernet corresponds to your Mac Ethernet adapter
Bridged: Wi-Fi corresponds to your Mac Wi-Fi adapter. (may work unstable depending on router settings)
Bridged: Default Adapter corresponds to whichever network adapter is chosen as the default (the first in the list System Preferences > Network) on the Mac

Thanks for the answers

I tried putting it to Bridged, using Wifi and Default Adapter, but it still says the same unknown error and retrying in 10 seconds.

Are there any other steps after it is set to bridged mode to take in windows?

Thanks

Try to get it to work in FGC first?

November 16th, 2019, 14:54
I tried with FGC, I have no key, but I was able to download the update.

Trying again FGU, same Unknown error and retrying in 10 seconds.

Next step, I'll try reinstalling a windows VM in Parrallels, as I really don't know what else to do.

Running the updater generally simply needs internet access. It uses the same protocol as browsing websites, to my knowledge. Can you browse websites from within your VM? If the updater gets stuck like that, but web access is working, it could be some security software (anti-virus or firewall) or it might be a file/folder permissions issue. Do you get the same result if you manually run the Fantasy Grounds Updater but right-click on it and choose Run as Administrator? Those are at least the first things that come to mind...

Linkjul
November 16th, 2019, 16:50
Yes I can browse the internet fine.

I don't have an Antivirus, but I do have a firewall. I disabled it without success.

I also tried using run as administrator without success.

Can you post the contents of the updater's log file here? It might shed some light on what's happening. You can get to it by clicking the Log button in the updater or by finding it in the root of your FGU Data folder after the updater runs. The file is named FGUpdaterEngine.log.

jrowsey1,

We've discovered that the Lua DLL we use requires an MS runtime; but we haven't gotten a chance to include with the installer yet.

This post has the link to Microsoft which has the installer for the MS runtime DLLs needed.

The link leads me to a 404 Not Found error. Can you double check it?

Thanks!

It think this is the solution Moon was looking to point you to. There are actually several threads on it so he might have been pointing to a different one.

Ok, I finally was able to find the problem and correct it.

Here is what I did :

I reinstalled Parallels (might no be needed)
I installed a new Windows 10 VM
- Before installing I configured the network adapter for the Bridged Wifi
- I also made sure that the VM was self contained and no access to OSX in any possible way
- Don't know if related, but I allowed any ressource to be controlled by the VM, without any limitation of RAM or CPU.

Now everything works!

Thanks everyone for the help!

I'm using Parallels too but I understand the effort to test FGU as a waste of time if you think that you will run FGU directly from MacOS later. I would appreciate if I could get the MacOS FGU beta version in order to test. Tweaking FGU on Parallels is not a smart approach for developing purposes... That's my point.

Just updated FGU this morning and have received the following ERROR CODE. My campaigns are not showing in Host Campaign. When I select either HOST CAMPAIGN or JOIN CAMPAIGN, it throws the same error code again. I made no configuration changes to Parallels, and this may have nothing to do with Parallels but I posted it here as I am running FGU via Parallels on my MacBook Pro.

Looking at that error report, it's just telling me that the BuildCampaignList function is failing. The only place that I can find that would generate an error like that doesn't indicate a bigger application issue is if one of the campaign.xml files in one of your campaigns is missing tags.

I've pushed a new build that should stop the error and allow the list to populate.

However, the campaign.xml will still need to be fixed in order to load that campaign. It will show up with an empty ruleset name in the launcher.

Excellent fix Moon Wizard, thank you. That new build fixed my issue. I didn't have to do anything with the campaign.xml file, everything loaded up perfectly.
