oops, didn't see that this was already reported in another thread. search doesn't always work well for me...

So I'm trying to open up a server to test things, and I keep getting an error, something about a missing dll.

Any idea what might be happening? I'm planning to uninstall and reinstall if I don't get an answer within about 24 hours...but I'd rather not have to run the updater again.

Hello Alyksandrei,

What ruleset is this with and was it a brand new campaign or a campaign copied over from FGClassic?

Maybe a stupid question, but is lua5.1.dll a valid file name? Seems like the extra period might be screwing things up?

It's valid.

Hello Alyksandrei,

5e, brand-new campaign. Just trying to load something to experiment with the new map tools. It also occurs whenever I try to join a game.

Just to check, I tried a new CoreRPG campaign, same results:

So it doesn't seem to be ruleset specific.

I'm (currently) running on Windows 8.1; trying to get my tablet to boot (it runs Win10) to see if the problem is related to my OS/hardware configuration. Or possibly a (repeatedly) cancelled and restarted update - when it sits for 10+ minutes without making progress, it's usually (though not in this case) a sign of something going wrong.

Can you try installing this Microsoft set of files to see if it solves the issue? If so, we'll probably have to look at updating the updater/installer to check for those files being installed already on the target machine.

I can't get the MS files to install - keeps giving me an "unknown error". I'll be attempting to get all this to work on my Win10 machine...as soon as I get it backed up and booting properly. I'm currently on my Win8.1 laptop. Not sure when the last Windows update was; I've had this problem with other programs not installing because of missing Windows updates. But Windows updates keep breaking my settings, so I don't like them.

I'll let you know if I have this problem on my other computer.

Is your Windows 8.1 operating system 32-bit or 64-bit?

Which file have you downloaded? vc_redist.x64.exe or vc_redist.x86.exe?

vc_redist.x64.exe
Is that the wrong one?

Yes, that's the right one you should be downloading and installing.

Perhaps you have an older version installed. Can you see if you can uninstall a Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable in your Add/Remove Programs area?
Otherwise, you might need to reach out to MS support forums to see why it won't install.

I found a few mentions of similar things on Google, but no obvious one-size-fits-all solution.

I can try that, but I'm fairly certain that my refusal to run Windows Updates on this machine has something to do with it - it's actually been a problem with multiple programs that I just give up on using on this machine because the Windows updates always break more than they "fix" and it's generally just not worth it. If I have trouble getting my Win10 machine running, I'll definitely investigate getting FGU working on my Win8.1 computer.

Sounds like something in the OS is not working right. You might consider a full OS re-install for that machine, if this is a recurring issue with multiple programs. I do a fresh one every year.
