I absolutely love it as an alternative to players who hold a stronger attachment to their character's identity / background.

I've decided I wanted to add the class to my FG, but I've ran into a moderate issue... It's A LOT to type out and..I can't find any source where I can copy and paste. So I've just put off from adding it.

For those who don't know what it is: https://img.fireden.net/tg/image/1511/28/1511285281092.pdf

Looks like the pdf is protected so the only option would be to do the typing.

Seems silly given that the PDF is free access. What stops someone from taking the time to type all that out to make it copy and pastable? You know?

The PDF isnt protected that I can see. its just a scanned image. it just needs to have the text OCR recognition done. I tried it and was able to copy the text.

Are you a max level programmer, or what? Lol. I'd like to backup my Fantasy Ground files too so I don't ever have to re-do any of the custom content I'm adding to it

lol, you can backup your FG data. just copy the campaign folders off to a dropbox or google drive location. Dont try to put your FG data folder on dropbox though, you will get corruption. but its perfectly fine to copy the folders off to dropbox when FG is not running.

What about the custom modules?

Yes. Anything in the modules directory can be copied off for a backup

Edit: let me clarify. All the dlc you purchase from smiteworks our Steam will automatically redownload so you don’t need to do anything with them. Any 3rd party stuff to download or buy from sites like DM Guild you can save a backup copy elsewhere.

But I'm sure the backing up is the same.

yes, no worries :) His "our" was probably a typo and he meant "or" :D

LOL, yes. I meant "or". the purchases through steam are sync'd with smiteworks. The only ones you need to worry about keeping backups of is the 3rd party stuff you find or buy elsewhere and your own personal campaign files.

How do I go about acquiring this text OCR recognition?

Personally I use Adobe Acrobat. There are many tools that can do this though. some online, some paid, some free.

It lets me open it up in Adobe Acrobat Reader, but costs money to make anything editable in order to allow me to copy and paste.

yeah, I use Acrobat Pro, which has that feature. You can google a free pdf ocr for several options. I dont use them so I cant really recommend any particular one

I am at work atm, so I'll have to check back home later whats the name of the free ocr software I am using for this purpose.

I have used it on other works of Matt Mercer so be warned that due to the font used there might be some missinterpretations of certain character combinations in the text-output produced by ocr software.

You can save each page of the PDF in .jpg image files, upload them on Google Drive, then right click the file to open it with Google Docs and it will OCR it for you.

I see Mattekure already hooked you up for PDFs, but in addition to what SirGreystone said, for anything at all, even something you see on the street as you're just walking along, Google translate can do it then output the text you can copy. You have to go page by page though. Use the camera translate feature, point your phone at the PDF on your computer screen and set it to translate from "detect language" to "English" and scan mode not the live update mode. Select the text in your picture and it outputs to the translate page where you can hit the icon to copy/paste into anything you want.

I use this to play Korean video games all the time, lol. But it also works English to English.

I've noticed that. Seems to trade one issue for another. Instead of typing everything out, I'd have to spell check everything xD

Yeah, thats just an inherent part of the PDF format. Internally it can be very complex and wonky, making extracting data like text and images problematic. When I am doing conversions I always do the copy/paste into notepad++ to clean up the text before import to FG, do spellcheck, remove wonky characters, etc.
