Call of Cthulhu Token Set (Devin Night?!)

Hey folks, this is mainly for those of us who don't get to play in person and use programs like Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds. I sent an email off to Devin Night (one of the best token artists) and he said he's game for making some CoC tokens. His packs that he sells are pretty much from commissioned work, just a theme collection. He said he normally charges $15 per token, (with the whole packs of multiple tokens going for usually $5 each) But, he was willing to drop to $10 if we got enough people on board for a theme.

So in essence, if we can get 30 people in on this, that's each person chipping in $25, and we all get a token pack with 60 tokens. And if we can get another 30 in on it, another $5 each, and another 60 tokens.

I'm definitely interested in this, and would be willing to chip in for 3 or 4 tokens, anyone else game? I would love to get some pulp era tokens in, and if we get enough folks, we can then come up with ideas for what the tokens will be, and organize who commissions what. I will be cross posting this on the CoC Reddit and on the CoC FB group, trying to get maximum number of people involved.

Kickstarter? Not sure if there is a minimum but a 750 goal seems doable, especially if you aim it generic enough to use with CoC but also similar era / genre games.

The other advantage is that your funding is a little more set than just a bunch of people on the forum saying sure. Of course you would want to work out the specifics in advance like once cash is delivered how long will it be from commission to delivery. Get an idea of exactly what you want the tokens to be. Etc. Maybe buy a couple of samples in advance to show off quality and content.

Not saying it is the only or best option but it has worked in the past for a good number of people.

My main thing is, I don't want to get into the situation where I am responsible for the money, and where accusations can get out of hand. It would be best for everyone to get together, agree on the tokens which they want to see, then we all send Devin the money and give him the list. Sure it would be EASIER to have it all filtered through one person, but it also may cause issues. Although, I may talk to him about moderating a kickstarter for him for this. Might help, since then he's got his name backing it, and can use the connections he's already built.

We kinda did something like this before for "Space opera" tokens - where individuals got in touch with Devin, described what they wanted and paid him direct. There was no bulk discount as it would have been impossible to do that without a coordinator. If you don't want to coordinate the bulk buy, or can't find someone to take it on, then a similar approach might be one to consider...

Devin and I came up with an idea. There WILL be a pack of Pulp Era tokens, I am going to fund it! He made me a deal I can't resist and if others want to order more, or maybe see if he will do the same deal with you, then you can pay a larger sum and get a full pack :D Likely he will start it sometime in December, but this gives me a chance to write down a list of tokens to make for a 20's era game. Going to be around 30ish tokens for this pack, but I may end up funding two or three of these if he's game.

You bought what? I can't find any Cthulhu-themed sets on his site, and I can't figure out how to navigate his site to individual token packs - just see a few bundles.

EDIT: you can navigate to the token sets by clicking on the "shop" in the top right corner. Clickin on "Tokens" just takes you to an information page.

The home page of his web site is blog with various entries. Scroll down to the entry titled The House on Halgrem Hill, written on Feb. 15, 2020. The text states that the image contains "a selection of tokens from one of Devin’s most recent packs 1930’s Characters, and some choice mythos style creatures from his widely popular Tome of Beasts compilation". The Tome of Beasts has several Cthulhu-inspired monsters, such as the Star-Spawn of Cthulhu. I think that is what is in the image. So there are some good tokens, but they are scattered around in other sets. I suggest contacting him directly and asking him to compile a Cthulhu set with these tokens that he has already made.

I am more than happy to draw new tokens for as many CoC tokens as you guys can come up with. Right now I'm not taking jobs that are greater than 6-10 tokens. Though you can submit requests for several 6-10 tokens sets. The reason is that there are a lot of people looking to get into virtual gaming, and they want to see their characters in a timely manner. I don't want any one job taking up more than a few days, that way everybody gets tokens as quickly as I can get to them. If I know you are contacting me for CoC tokens I will make them when I can and make sure they get into a set as soon as I possibly can. If you let me know you came as part of this discussion, I can also give you all the CoC tokens I've made up to that point, or make a special list where you can all access them as they get done.

I am more than happy to work with any of all of you to get a set made.

What is your current rate for a 10 token set which is not exclusive, i.e. you retain the copyright, and could start selling it right away with no restrictions?

As for the logistics, perhaps best if you can set up a Kickstarter or Indiegogo with the going rate as the goal? Additional sets as a stretch goal in multiples of the going rate if funding goes above the goal - I wouldn't be surprised if it does due to KS's wide reach. I'm sure we can come up with enough monsters and tokens to cover several sets! I think that's easiest and most secure method for you and the contributors, as you could control the campaign and funds yourself, rather than trusting some random guy on the forum.

Below a list I came up with for 10 common Cthulhu mythos monsters. I think Lesser Servitor Races make more sense than the big bads, as the former are much more common encounters. Anyone reading the thread, any changes you would make?

Right now turnaround time is about a month.

A kickstarter would require effort that would take away from token time. I'd have to write something up, make graphics, check it daily, add stretch goals. It's not a bad idea if I had the time to deal with those aspects, it's just not something I have time for right now.

I can drop the price down to $5 per token if that helps you get more people on board to order 1 or 2 tokens as part of the CoC group.

I understand the time to setup and maintain KS is quite a commitment.

I can set up a Gofundme to raise the funds:

Step 1: I set up a Gofundme to gather the funds
Step 2: People pay to Gofundme
Step 3: When we gather the $50, I withdraw
Step 4: I send the funds to Devin
Step 5: He creates those beautiful tokens, sends them to me, and I distribute

I've never used Gofundme, but it's available here in Europe. Fees (https://www.gofundme.com/pricing/) are 2.9% plus 0.25 EUR ($0.30) per donation, so we'd have to raise a bit more than the $50 so we don't shortchange Devin.

I don't know how to price this. Thing is, if we set the Gofundme at 10 USD per person we'd only need five people which I think we could muster. But they could probably get it cheaper by waiting for it to be released on Devin's store, so the funders need to be aware of this.

Alternatively, if we set it to $4, it would possibly be cheaper than on Devin's store. But we would require 13 people to donate, and I'm not sure we can find that many here.

Ok, I have talked to Magnimost, and I think the easiest thing to do is just make the tokens. No upfront cost to anybody, All I need is a good list of about 20 creatures. If people want to send reference pics of 2-3 creatures directly to me that would be great. I can google the popular ones, but if your version looks a certain way please let me know. Once the tokens are made I will release the set as quickly as I can. Cthulhu adjacent tokens are fine. Thanks.
