View Full Version : Is Bandwidth something to consider?

Greetings again! I normally use a paid VPN > VPN express all the time. On a side note I am very happy with it.

I use Spectrum cable for my internet. I also pay extra go get my download speed to 500 megabits/second. Now I still think this speed is bullshit for the price since most other countries are speeding along at 1 gig/second or faster.

While using my VPN my speed drops to about 100 mg/sec. If I disable the VPN it climbs back up to about 480.

I successfully figured out how to (configure my router) open the port and players can connect either with or without the VPN enabled.

Would it be a better experience if I use FG with the VPN disabled? I don't have a problem doing this, I was curious if there is a performance increase with greater bandwidth or just keep it on anyway. I expect to have about 3 or 4 folks connect to my game at home.

100 MB/s is more than enough to run a game. The GM is the most bandwidth intensive, as upload requirement is size of each file/update times number of players.

I've been running on 60-100 MB/s for years, and having seen any issues, even while streaming video chat myself and other videos via YouTube or shows on Netflix on other family machines.

In thinking about bandwidth, consider your players download speeds as well as your upload speeds. I've played games with players whose download speeds were considerably lower than the GM upload speed. There are ways to deal with this though so you can have a smooth game. For example, in one game I ran, I had masked all the maps, marked them as unidentified, then marked them as pre-load, so they would be downloaded immediately when a player connects. Then I let the player connect to my table 45 mins before game start. Ended up being a smooth game with no delay waiting for him to download things.

My download speed is, on a good day, 500 Kb/second and upload sometimes into single digits. I can use FG fine, so you should have no problems.
