Many many maps!

I have been hunting free hi res maps but realized before i add anything to FG I should ask what is a good size in dimensions the maps should be for FG. There are some mega dungeons that I would like to add and would like to keep them all intact without having to break them up.

1) 2048x2048 pixels or less. Affects memory used by FG. Until FG Unity comes along FG Classic (32-bit app) has a limited amount of memory, even if your computer has many GB. So keep maps to 2048x2048 pixels or less.
2) 1MB in files size or less. Directly affects share time to players. Less important than #1.

Look at how I do Undermountain. I have a low res map of an entire level, but then use high res (100 pixels / 5 ft) for combat.

LordEntrails,

This is very helpful. Can you still play on the 'low res' map via dungeon crawling? What I mean is I am going to play with a friend doing a basic dungeon crawl in FG using P2 rules. Both of us will learn both FG and P2 while playing (although I am dedicating time to read the book in detail).

Id like to get any random dungeon map that I can 'fill in most of the screen so he can plod his way around the dungeon. Would I be better served building quadrants like some dungeons and at a certain resolution to do this?

Exactly. So the low res map (which is still larger in pixels than recommendation, but since I carefully manage what images are shared is ok) This is from a recent steam I did for FGC, At this time mark the player is actually looking at the low res full level map, just zoomed in. https://youtu.be/7tmDBjuyL-M?t=14571 The one token on the map is just a generic party token I use to track the location of the party on that map (not linked to the combat tracker).

My players (and a few a bunch of various play test groups) all like having a 'master' map, even when is is low resolution, to wander around, and then I just do high res details maps for each location. The biggest thing here is to make sure their is enough overlap and room for the party to be outside the location. Never know when you have to handle a retreat or a stealthy approach etc.
