View Full Version : Updates of D&D 5e contents too slow

Hi everyone!

Recently I started having problems downloading new updates of D&D 5e related content.

Other systems, such as pathfinder and savage worlds download a lot more quickly, but those connected to D&D 5e are taking hours.

Does anyone know what this problem might be?

Hi VCSP, welcome to FG.

There's no reason why 5e modules should take any longer than any others. It sounds like something on your end is interfering with the download - possibly flood protection or Parental control on your router or possibly something to do with your anti virus software. Might also be lack of disc space?

I disabled both router and windows firewall, but the problem persists.

Other programs, like steam, are doing the downloads at normal speed, only the updater of the FG is very slow.

Will it be any problem on the updater client that is limiting the download speed?

Would you know which port it uses to download the updates?

The updates use either http (80/tcp) or https (443/tcp). I’m not near my computer to verify, but probably http. I have one of the D&D bundles, so lots of 5e material, and did a full re-download the other day on a slower connection than I normally use (~50mbit cable, vs my gig fiber) and the full thing took maybe 15 minutes...

I have also received this message:

ERROR - GetPackageFile: Network: time out

Maybe it's a server problem?

Is it timing out at a specific file? If so take a note of the name of the file that it fails on then go into your FGData/vault folder and delete that file and then do an update. (Unless it is a .pak file then it will be in the FGData/rulesets folder).

No, it's all files that are slow.

Yesterday, after 12 hours and several attempts, I finally managed to download all the files.

I tried changing all the router settings, disable the Windows protections, but nothing was effective.

I've tried other computers, but the problems persist.

I do not know what else I can do!

What sort of results do your get with an ISP speed test tool, such as this one?

Also, is your computer connected to your router with a wire only, or are you using WiFi at all? If you're on wireless, turn WiFi off on your computer, connect with a wire, and test again to see if there's a significant difference.

Note that for the purpose of port forwarding (if you're the DM), switching between wired/wireless will almost certainly change your local IP address and break any port forwarding rule you made in your router. This is not important for the purpose of testing your download speed, but just something to be aware of.

I tried both wireless and wire, the result was the same.

I'm pretty sure the problem is on the router, but I've already changed all possible settings and nothing worked.

Try rebooting your router (physically unplug from power, wait ~30 seconds, plug it back in, wait ~10 minutes, test again), and also your modem (if you have one for your internet service).

Also, check and see if there are any firmware updates available for your router from the manufacturer (this is just something everyone should do from time to time).
