View Full Version : PureVPN Hosting Trouble

I've Tried to set up hosting through PureVPN due to being in a college dorm that can't be port fowarded. Connections Fails whenever I try.

I Looked at this previous thread https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?40839-PureVPN-Question

and was unable to get anywhere.

I Do have the Dedicated Server and Port Fowarding addons and think it may be a firewall issue as gone over in the previous thread. But I don't know specifically what or where to change.

Open Network and Sharing Centre and make sure that your LAN and PureVPN connections are set to Private or Home.

Once you’ve done what damned mentions, wait for PureVPN to register an IP address (it doesn’t do this immediately) before starting FG. On the FG load campaign screen click in the external IP field and ensure it is the same IP as reported by PureVPN. Then try the connection test.

I did have to change both my Wifi and VPN to both be Private connections, and the VPN's ip does show up in fantasy grounds (Both internal and external) but the connection test still came up as failed after a few seconds of it trying to connect.

You still have to port forward. Did you set that up properly? If you have multiple routers (modem and wireless if they are different units) ar often culprit but probably not in dorm

Unfortunately I don't have the option to port forward from my dorm. When I was at home I had success in Port Forwarding there, This VPN service also has an addon to port-forward.

Well if you don’t have a router is something between vpn and you then you shouldn’t need to port forward. However, your computer or something might be blocking it. I have never heard anyone needing the PureVPN forwarding option.

Bidmaron - can you reread what you have posted? Im not following any of it...

Thatpandaman - you need your computer to be listening on a public IP address on TCP Port 1802.
I dont use PureVPN so I dont know its specifics.
If you have a dedicated IP address then you should be able to configure the connection to open TCP 1802.
If you have the Port Forward option configure it to Port Forward TCP 1802.

I hate not having keyboard on phone
It doesn’t sound like you need to port forward.
However something on your machine is blocking the port or at least intercepting. If you can surf internet on PureVPN there shouldn’t be anything the dorm could do to block you. It has to be a security feature on your machine

With the dedicated IP address option for PureVPN you don’t need any additional port forwarding in the network - that’s the whole reason to use it.

However, as has been mentioned, there may be local security apps blocking the connectivity on the GM computer itself.

@Thatpandaman - what AV/security apps are on your computer?

Hallelujah, I got a success on the connection test! And was able to get a player to Connect.

It seems like it was a firewall issue where the port 1802 was allowed as an inbound rule but not outbound.

It was Windows Defender that was causing it specifically.

Great! Glad you got it working. Game on! :)

I'm still struggling trying to get mine to work - currently at a hotel so have no access to the modem.

Both Internal and External IP in Fantasy Grounds are the same - which match my PureVPN IP address - I have dedicated IP, have tried to set my security software (ESET) to allow 1802 for all fantasy grounds .exe files. Still get a failed test - not sure what to try next....

Have you tested this and it works when you are home? (i.e. the PurePN connection)
Does the Pure VPN window show connection with Dedicated IP?
Does your network connection show Private/Home/Work and not Public?

Did you connect to the server with the dedicated IP in dedicated IP mode?

Try deleting the permission from the firewall and accepting again when prompted as the update process sometimes makes the firewall think it is a new program.

LordEntrails -

Yes - back on my network - the connection test still fails. But people can connect, so I am happy.

Myrdin -

yes using the dedicated IP mode.

Myrdin -
So I can host a game from home - firewall ported. However if I switch to my pureVPN connection even at home no one can get through to the game. As I travel a fair bit for work, I would like to get this sorted. What do I need to check or change?

I was just able to use mine (new install at work.)

Did you connect to the dedicated IP server? Is it the same IP address every time?

What are your IP addresses that show up when you check?

Check what Myrdin mentions.

Also:
1) Make sure that your PureVPN network connection (once connected) is showing as Private and not Public.
2) Start your VPN connection before you start Fantasy Grounds. Once the VPN connection is completely connected, start Fantasy Grounds and on the Load Campaign screen click the Address Information - External field, this should show the IP address of your VPN connection.

It must be the start VPN first that was causing me problems, it showed "success" this time.

Oddly - when I am connected to VPN - I cannot post a reply to this forum.
