Wondering what your guys opinions are on this, basically its a distilled version of the d20 rules with some other stuff thrown in, however it definately has the feel of Classic D&D. I'm actually considering making a ruleset for this.

Interesting, I will download it and look it over. Looks very interesting, and very very old school! Sweet! Course it is still d20 though (blah!) Love the OpenOffice notebook paper character sheet, that is sooo perfect.
I have been looking over a rules-lite game system called Stained Glass that is based on The Window (both are availalble here: https://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/windowrpg/ in the files section). Both are cinematic and very rules lite.

Well, I have permission from the author to create a ruleset for FG so I think I'm going to go ahead and go for it (Not to mention the rules are free!!). :D I like the disclaimer about the 100 sided die not truly existing in the SG rules, lol, I'm callin em on this one, Its that fist sized spherical die we used to throw at the GM when he made a bad rule call!!!

I definately think that any character sheet should look like a plain old piece of notebook paper, fitting in with the entire idea that this is an old-school system.

Yeah, this has me sooo wanting to run a old school game.
And it has real halfling/hobbits! Not the 3.5 mutant midget elf things they call halflings these days (all you younglings that think halflings wear boots can just shut up!)
tdwyer11b, here is a place to get some images for use as the books if you are planning on replacing those: https://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/rulebooks.html

Here's something for you guys to look at, think it looks a little better with some character info filled in. I'm thinking of moving the saving throws over to the right of the ac, hp, ab area. What do you guys think? Also for those of you who haven't read the PDF, here's a brief description:
The Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game is a rules-light
game system based on the d20 SRD v3.5, but heavily
rewritten with inspiration from early RPG game systems.
It is intended for those who are fans of "old-school"
game mechanics.

I say move them there, if I remember correctly that was how the character sheets were ususally done. Looking real good though, cannot wait to get my paws on this. Might have to do up some adventures to help people get moving along with this great system.
I notice your test character is a halfling.....ROCK ON!

Holy crap...I finally got around to d/l this - and its almost EXACTLY how I remember the old Red Box series...this is soooo cool :)
If you need a hand with this td, lemme know! If I get back into Fantasy writing again, I so wanna try an support this :) (Actually, it also reminds me a lot of C&C that's out there...but this is a lot cleaner, simpler, and "old school").
Peace :D

Thanks for the offer Kalan, I'm gonna keep my recent work hosted so if you wanna help, you can get the ruleset and go to it. Fortunately the rules are in PDF form so it's basically cut-n-pasting whats in it into FG code. Tonite I added some of the PC races, text for the character classes and finished building the nodes for all the spell descriptions. Good thing is, my weekend is getting ready to start, so I can probably have this thing done in the next couple of days.
Here's the link to the recent ruleset:

Looking god td. One thing, on the character sheet, the equipment block, might want to make it one of those defined, but scrollable entries (like the moeny and notes entries are). As it is now, if you get to the end and continue adding text, it runs over and covers the entries beneath it.
Other than that, looking great!

Maybe even to add to the feel of the whole "retro" thing - I remember playing the old red box at those old school desks...maybe if you could figure out how to do that ;)
Or not...I used to get beat up a lot in those days too :S

Kalan, sure I know how to do it, it's just finding the right graphic to put in there. In the meantime, here's the recent ruleset with all the spells in (including descriptions)!! Also the classes have saving throw tables in them and the races are finished. In all, going together very smooth.

Here's another source for old-skool gaming that can be shared freely. It's not rules light, but if you start reading over it, you'll notice that it is very "similar" to another well known game and it's OGL!! Good stuff.

BTW, the BFRPG ruleset is almost ready to go, just need to finish the monster entries and it's ready to be hosted and playtested. Not bad for 9 days work so far. :)

Hahaha tdwyer11b! That's awesome (the notebook paper character sheet)! I kinda like this... I'd use this rule set.
I've been thinking about this.
You could make the background look like a table top with loose character sheets, a drink, dice everywhere, maybe some coke ring stains on the table and sheets. That's what the character sheet is missing, a Mountain Dew ring on the upper right corner!
Make the token box look like a cigar box.
For tokens, you could scan in pennies and other assorted change, dice, and "go" markers.
Make a few sample maps that look hand drawn on white graph paper with blue lines.
Hahah - I'd so help with this ruleset.

As I have yet to actually get some gameplay with this system, how's your game going? Care to share some of your opinions?
Of course it's not perfect (yet, hehe) and I've pointed a few things out to the author, such as the lack of the ability bonus table, which he promptly emailed to me. Here they are:
3 = -3
4-5 = -2
6-8 = -1
9-12 = +0
13-15 = +1
16-17 = +2
18 = +3
Also another thing I noticed was the lack of an analyze or identify spell. Which he says is also being corrected.

For those of you wanting to help, here's the monster file, it's really all thats left to be done. As you can tell some of the entries have been put in, basically its just cutting and pasting from the PDF right into the code, since all of the nodes have been built.

Hey, just thought I'd stop in and see how things are going. I'm getting very close to a "final" version of the BFRPG core rules... I'm looking at a print version (via Lulu.com) probably by the end of February. I saw all the kind words in this thread, and I'd like to invite anyone interested in discussing the rules (as opposed to the Fantasy Grounds conversion) to join us in the Workshop at:
https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=42
All the threads tagged [BFRPG] relate to the Basic Fantasy rules.
Hope to see you there!

You need to visit the main site: www.basicfantasy.org
The current version is 2nd Edition (Release 75), and as far as I'm concerned it's the final version. That does not mean that development has ended... just that the core is done.

I hadn't seen this thread before, but I love the character sheet graphics! The screenshot of the ruleset makes me think it is for FG1, not FG2.
Although not the same, there is an FG2 conversion of Labyrinth Lord on the FG Wiki (https://oberoten.dyndns.org/fgwiki/index.php/Labyrinth_Lord), that is also a retro clone of original D&D BECM (Basic, Expert, Companion and Master) rules, and comes complete with the reference modules (spells, monsters, classes etc).
There are two extensions that can be used with it: one is a mod to make it more compatible with D&D BECM (the Beckham extension (https://oberoten.dyndns.org/fgwiki/index.php/Beckham_Extension)), and another is a character sheet skin, called the Vellum Texture Pack, which is bundled with the ruleset. I'm now minded to create a second character sheet skin that uses the ruled paper from this thread.
Cheers
Foen

You can download everything from the main site:

There is a link at the top if you'd like to buy print versions of the game; or just go to the Downloads page and get whatever you want.
You might also check out the forum section, which is where we do all development of materials for the game.

Not to belabor the point on this one but I would be willing to either pay to have it created or offer up some incentive otherwise (web hosting, a steam gift card, etc...) to get this one created. The only stipulation would be that it would need to be released to the public. I am happy to add the modules myself but the Ruleset is just a bit beyond my current capabilities.
Thanks!
