View Full Version : Non-D20 system mod

Hello all. I'm the line developer for the Suzerain RPG, which is a non-D20 system game. I'm interested in modifying Fantasy Grounds to our system - completely updating every aspect, I suppose - and was wondering whether such a radical overhaul was possible. I've seen people doing mods to other D20 rulesets (Arcana Evolved, etc), but wasn't sure if Fantasy Grounds was designed for anything quite so major!
Your thoughts, anyone?

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Some things you can't do like remove certain dice of what is displayed. So if your mod did not use 4 sided die, you couldn't remove them from the display.

I'm creating a ruleset for the TSSI gameset (unofficially). It is not D20, though it uses the same set of dice (except the 20 sider...I think).
Although you have to do a lot of new graphics, reference texts, etc, it is possible.
I think with the newer version coming out, the scripting could aid even more.

It really depends on what the system you want use needs in terms of dice.
At this time you cannot roll more then 1 type of die at a time, this causes problems with some game systems. Though to get around this you can always just roll each die type and add them up yourself. My group did this wiht the Serenity RPG and it worked.
Another problem is that if your system uses dice that are not part of the standard set (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20) then you will not have a die that you can roll with your mouse. Though you can still set up the /die command to be able to roll any die type that you would want.

Well, on the one hand you could say that the Suzerain rules system has the toughest of dice to simulate... it uses cards, and even then it uses a deck with the four suits of 1-10, plus the king of hearts and queen of spades for a 42 card deck in total.
On the other hand you could say that it'll be close to impossible to put this into Fantasy Grounds and live with a d10 instead - it's close, and pretty easy. Would be nice not to even see the other dice though.

Well another thing you could do is have the DM roll all of the dice (or draw the cards) and then say what he rolled/drew to the rest of the players. Since FG is just a tabletop and does not automate anything ingame this would not cause any problems.

Hmm, interesting approach. That is certainly possible to emulate in Fantasy Grounds, and with the scripting capabilities that will be supplied in the upcoming v2.0 when it comes out, I would venture to say it will likely be even easier.
Is this 42-card deck the only incorporation of "dice" in your system? Is the deck re-shuffled each time a card is drawn? Are drawn cards returned to the deck? If so, a /die 42 command would easily emulate this. If not, it should still be (pretty easily) possible, though it would be a bit more work.
Overall, Fantasy Grounds is very adaptable. I think it actually is even possible to hide the 3d dice, if you so wished. Another nice thing is that SmiteWorks is working to make sure that v2 won't outdate the work the community's already done, so a new version of your game's set could be made at your leisure, since whatever you work on before 2.0 should still function fine.
We'd need to know more details about the system to know for sure if what you want to do is possible, but I'm fairly confident it would be. You'll also find that the community here is very helpful with implementing whatever changes you have trouble figuring out yourself.
You might also want to get in touch with the Smite development staff. As fellow industry-types, you might be able to get your hands on some extra details or support in converting your system for use with the program.

I believe they mentioned this feature is coming out in the next patch. Currently you can move them around but trying to move them off screen causes them to act like they were being tossed.
What I have done is I created a character called DiceHolder, I always sign him on first, and relocate all the dice I am not using to the middle of his portrait.

That's all useful to know. Anyone have a release date for version 2.0?
