View Full Version : Streaming Challenges

Streaming a 5E game, (new to it this year) and I have a couple of challenges I cannot figure out. Hoping for some help, my apologizes if these questions have been addressed elsewhere.

1. I DM FG using dual monitors. When I stream I show only the left monitor. However, when I do this the desktop decal is in the middle, and hence it is split between two monitors. Is there any way to move the desktop decal a few 100 pixels to the left so I can show it on the stream?

2. Watching other talented FG streamers, I see some of them have these mini-sheets or character images on the side or bottom of their screen that light up when the players talk. I'm guessing the mini-sheets are just images linked somehow to Discord and the players/channel. How do you do that? I've been using standard Discord overlays and OBS Studio and I cannot find a reference to doing this anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any help!

For #1, yes, but you will have to modify or make a decal extension of your own and alter the code so it doesn't place it in the center.

Did you check this for #2? https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?24282-How-to-make-an-overlay-and-setup-OBS-for-streaming!

Thank you for your reply.

Is there a decal template somewhere with editing instructions?

While these vids are great and I did watch them earlier this year, I did not see an answer to my question there. The DM does use webcams within a graphic overlay, but they do not light up when the players talk (plus we are not using webcams). Lighting up of images is specifically what I'm looking to do. If I missed that in the vids and someone has watched them, please let me know which one to review again.

Thanks again for the reply.

See "Custom Decal Tutorial" here: https://www.fg-con.com/free-downloads/

I don't know how they do it specifically. It does have to do with overlay and API capabilities of OBS. Hopefully one of the streaming gurus will jump in and get you the answer you are looking for. Otherwise you might have to do some Googling on OBS forums, not sure the answer is on the FG forums here :(

For the decal - you cant move it (I dont believe so anyway) so pad your decal with additional transparency on one side or the other to nudge it over.
Beware this will nudge it over on all player screens too.
You may be better off turning the decal off.

Once, I was made an extension that I can move and resize the decal, but I lost, I will try find and post what I had done :D

Here it is, I know it is not perfect ... but with a fine tuning ... perfect ... this is the limit of a person who does not know how to program but who likes to change things a lot.

Yeah, I just realized that after looking over the template. I'll pass on this and keep the decal off. Thanks for the advice!

Hmm .. I like that you put it over a smaller chat window. Might try that! ;)

I don't know what overlays/mini-sheets you are mentioning. Perhaps ask the streamer who is using them?

I know there was a guy around a while ago (Shadazar) doing some sort of rotating overlay, but I don't think he ever posted how to actually do it. But I think the thread should be searchable.

DM Dave and Rob2e (?) use them, plus I've seen other people as well. I'm assuming it is a Discord overlay/setup of some sort, I have no clue and could not find info on how to do this anywhere. Hence, post. :)

It will be an OBS overlay, not Discord. But, I don't know how to do it either :)

No, as previously mentioned. He does stuff with webcams, not interested in that.

But if I understand it correctly, just because it is a webcam that he is overlaying, doesn't mean that you can use the same methods for overlaying any window or graphic. Think of it in a wider perspective, how to combine multiple windows or graphics into one single window for the stream.

That said, I've never done any of that, but that's my understanding how it's done :)

Discord has an app to integrate with OBS. You can find the apps here: https://discordapp.com/streamkit and the OBS app. specifically, here: https://streamkit.discordapp.com/overlay

This app will allow you to, among other things, display who is speaking in the Discord chat.

Wow ... I really didn't think it would be this difficult to get an answer. Gonna try one more time.

I'm currently using the standard discord overlays. They are boring and I wanted to do something cool I saw on a couple of FG streams. I see it all the time on Roll20 streams, but I thought I would come here first .. ya know?

I don't use webcams, don't even own one, and have no desire to reverse engineer something that "might" be the same. I was hoping to get specific instructions on how to do what I want because I see TONS of streams doing this.

Just wanted to know if someone knows how to do what I'm trying to achieve. I've been searching on and off for a month now, watching videos and reading web pages and I cannot figure out how to do this, so I thought I would come to the community of the software I use.

I have mini-character sheet graphics that I made, small square PNG image files with a border. I want to link that image to the Discord channel so that when the player talks the image border on their mini-sheet changes color. That's it, and for the life of me I can't find any instructions or tutorials that outline this (and only this) process.

That's it, and thanks to all that are trying to help.

No I do not know specifically how to do what you want. I think the only people that do are those doing exactly what you want to do. Since you haven't even given us any graphic examples or links to examples of what you want to do, I don't think anyone can give you specific instructions.

The best we can do other than suggesting how you can reverse engineer what you want is to suggest you ask the exact people that are doing exactly what you want.

Sorry you did not find our efforts helpful.

You might get more information from some of the streamers on the FGCollege (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?40020-Join-Fantasy-Grounds-College-Learn-Fantasy-Grounds-learn-D-amp-D-and-then-play!); I know there's a few that hang around in there.

My apologies, there is only so much I can do from work on my phone.
