I have a "few" jpg's in my collection that would work great for character portraits and / or tokens. I know that FG wants it in .png format. what is the best way to convert it to png? I don't have any mainstream graphics programs.

I do apologize for the repetition since i am sure this has been talked about in other threads. If it has then please just direct me to that thread. Thanks

I believe you can try out the GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/), as it is free. That may help.

Also, I think that windows paint program can save your jpeg or gif as a png. (I refuse to open it, so I am not sure.. LOL)

FG can use jpg's or gifs as tokens or portraits. I use jpgs for both.

First, as mentioned you don't have to convert to pngs, though you may wish to.
Second, while GIMP works it is massive overkill for graphic file conversions. I recommend IrfanView. It is a free file converter utility that also can crop, resize and resample most graphic files. It also batch converts. The only thing that it can not do is deal well with transparentcy. https://www.irfanview.com/
