View Full Version : Wonderdraft, for overworld maps

So like many here, I've used Inkarnate to make some nice RPG maps to show to my players. I really liked the hand drawn style, but it was limited in how large the maps could be. Even as a 'Pro' subscriber there was a hard size limit to how large your maps could get.

Enter Wonderdraft, which I got a heads up about over in the Dungeon Fog channel (a really great battle map tool). Wonderdraft can do everything Inkarnate can do, and can do large maps up to 8162px in size. They may even scale higher as it's a native app, and not limited by memory from a browser sandbox like Inkarnate does.

It has these nifty features for raising and lowering a land mass as each map isn't simply a canvas, but a topography as well where you can lower/raise sea level to sink portions your map and watch water fill in the gaps. Opposite of this, you can raise islands out of the ocean with a really organic feel.

Here's the developer first showing a nicely done map before quickly whipping up a new map that looks quite plattable in only 5 minutes! Finally, I can do regional maps quickly or prototype world maps my experimenting with their generator. And this is only in the alpha which you can pick up if you wish to support it. Pay once, get infinite maps, no subscriptions!

Also for incarnate users... believable coast lines due to built in map topography!

For those who picked it up (20 bucks is cheap for infinite maps imho, no subscription!)

This was made by a member on reddit whom only spent only a few hours

And yes, I'm fanboi-ing it up on here because as a GM, Overworld maps are the single hardest thing to get right... this tool makes it easy to generate, modify, or simply raise the land out of the sea itself like hawaii. Inkarnate is great, but Sculpting the shores and the map took so much effort, this makes it near effortless to get a nice visual aesthetic.

Here's my own after about 20 minutes of minimal effort.

Note that the text tool is a bit buggy for the alpha, if you need to edit your text, select another tool then re-select the text tool and edit your text asset.

That is a surprisingly powerful tool for just $20. My only complaint is that there doesn't appear to be any way to make the ocean actually blue. Though the pastel map style is blueish, and you can color the coast and rivers blue. That is a nitpick however. Overall, quite good. Thank you for the heads up!

Looks very tempting Ken L, however from what I can see, it looks like it randomly generates landmasses. Is there a tool where you can control the shape of the landmass?

Wow, this is interesting. And it is not online product demanding subscription. Will put this on my lists of thing I follow :)

You can change the color of the water by going to the water tool and then going to properties. to change the hue/saturation/value (HSV).

Yep,

You can also alter the coast line colors, their blend, their shape etc...

AH thank you. Those terms had confused me and I hadn't gotten around to playing with them. Usually when I think of colors I expect RGB or something like that. Thanks again!

I was in their Discord last night learning how to add custom assets. As I am a bit of a digital hoarder, this is relevant for me. Helped the author identify a bug in the custom asset code, which he released a fix for (among other things) today. I am able to load 1164 "mountain" symbols into a single Palette folder with an almost imperceptible increase n load time. I'm plenty impressed with this product, particularly with the ability to easily add my own symbols. Well worth the $20 pre-release price.

Well, this is my first foray with the program. I haven't added text to it yet, but it seems to have come out quite nicely so far.

This is a good map program. I now have or use inkarnate pro cc3+ DPS and wondercraft

I like each for their own different things. I still say the best most professional looking maps are from cc3 but it has a steep learning curve...its the most advanced of the programs I've listed.

The beauty for me with wondercraft and inkatnate is creating decent maps on the fly.

My gripe however is all these map options for overlland and so few that specialize on dungeons or towns.

https://worldographer.com/ Watch the video to see it directly create a city simply by clicking on an icon in an overland map, then a building by clicking on a building in the city map by linking to https://www.dungeonographer.com/ & https://cityographer.com/

And if you really want to go all out, this one is not for the faint of heart, nor is it aimed at fantasy worlds though it absolutely can (and has) been used for such:

I don't recommend Dunjinni anymore. My understanding is that it is dead, and even though the web store still exists, their is no one home and any orders placed for physical products will not be fulfilled.

WARNING The DundJinni "Store" on this website has not been functioning properly for many years. Use it at your own risk.
Paypal does not work at all.
Credit Card purchases occasionally work. But it is not guaranteed.
There is No One operating the store and we have no access to it. So:
Do not try to purchase a CD/DVD/Hard Copy. They don't exist here. And there is nobody to mail it anyway.
If you have a problem there is no one who can fix it.

Welcome Ashik

Wonderdraft is a desktop app.

and it has a Native Linux client too!

I have made Dungeon maps with it as well, there are so many assets available for free on cartographyassets.com/ (and some paid as well).

Converted my old world D&D map from the 1980's to digital using this program. Scanned in the old hand drawn map and used it to generate a world. Looks amazing.
