View Full Version : A few questions to not overcommit myself

Hey, I've been recently looking for a new solution for handling my live games in a bit more "feasible" manner (tablespace is extra limited, yet there's a giant TV to help out), and my mind was swirling a lot on this tool. (and then Roll20 gave a sucker punch today) I was looking through all the store options, and wanted to ask a couple of questions which I felt weren't covered well on FAQ:

1) The Ultimate license is purely for "I am GM and we and players footed for one license deal", and the only feature that it gives over standard is running for free(Demo) people, right? So if I want to use FG purely as DM aid for live games (me being the only one logged into the system), Standard License covers me fully and if need be, I always have option to upgrade?

2) Do the Data Libraries and Tokens provided by base license substitute for any of the books, like PHB and MM of DnD 5e, or do I have to buy them up anyway?

3) I would imagine the answer is a flat "No" as the content here is FG's and just "licensed by WotC", but is there any discount if physical books are owned?

Thanks for the answers in advance, and I am looking forward to using this.

Welcome to the forums.

1) From what you describe, the standard license should be fine.

Assuming you're referring to D&D 5e (there are lots of other RPG systems on Fantasy Grounds).

2) You get the D&D Basic Rules and SRD data with the standard or ultimate license. You will need to purchase the extra products (PHB, MM, DMG) if you want to have the full content of those products.

3) There is no discount from WotC from owning any of their products in another form.

Hi LtLukoziuz, and Welcome! to the Community,

Let me add this - If you haven't done so already, let me encourage you to take a look at some of the great Tutorial Videos available on the Fantasy Grounds Wiki (and on YouTube). Damn's are good, as are Xorn's, and people seem to like mine as well (mine are also available from the links in my sig, below).

Start with the ones on the CoreRPG, because the CoreRPG forms the foundation of just about all the RPGs we play with Fantasy Grounds - so by learning how to use FG with the CoreRPG you'll learn about 80% of what you'll need to know to play any RPG with Fantasy Grounds. Once you've gone through the CoreRPG Videos you can then go on to Videos about your chosen RPG.

When you get familiar with the basic Fantasy Grounds product the next step is to check out some of the Extensions (Plug-Ins) for FG, such as the DOE: Sound (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?31369-DOE-Sound-Extension), DOE: Locations (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20794-DOE-Locations-Extension), DOE: Weather (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?22142-DOE-Weather-Extension) and DOE: Organisations (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?27169-DOE-Organisations-Extension) Extensions (to name a but a few - and a Shameless™ Self Plug).

You may also want to drop into the FG College (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?40020-Join-Fantasy-Grounds-College-Learn-Fantasy-Grounds-learn-D-amp-D-and-then-play!); a great place for newcomers to get started.

And of course, there's plenty of Twitch Channels where you can watch games in progress (including my own - https://www.twitch.tv/dulux_oz - another Shameless™ Self Plug).

And keep on asking questions - we're a pretty friendly lot here, and we love answering questions.

Cheers

Oh yeah, I am not dropping into this one blindly ;) But thank you for the answers. I will grab a month subscription, for now, to try out things with help of tutorials, and will probably grab a lifetime sub and few books afterward. Thank you for all the links too.

Check out the above, comments give an overview.

Edit: Here's the post on /r/roll20 that outlines and shows the history, maybe it's better than the first one I posted

LtLukoziuz no discount but the D&D licensed materials are 40% cheaper on FG than they are on Roll20 and there is usually some D&D product with an extra 20% off on sale :)

I ran a 5e campaign using just the SRD for about a year, I just manually entered the extra stuff as I needed. After many, many hours of work over that time, I eventually just said screw it and bought the PHB and MM. Since my time is money, it was more cost efficient for me to make those purchases in the long run.

Huh, never knew that Roll20 actually curated their reddit thread. But okay, Roll20 on their forums (and evidently other places now) have since the early days ALWAYS shut down any type of criticism, whether meant to be constructive or otherwise. So this behavior isn't new, at least to people looking in from the outside.

But welcome to a friendlier community! :)

Let me also point LtLukoziuz (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/member.php?137076-LtLukoziuz) to this post, it has a good outline of the various 5E products and when and why you might want to buy them on FG; https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?32987-What-do-I-need-to-play-5e

1) yes, I do this myself (although I have an ultimate license for folks who do connect in game and my online games.

2) Depends on the ruleset, but for pathfinder and 5e you get base SRD content free. For either I would highly recommend getting the paid content as it is really well presented and just makes everything so very very convenient. I would also suggest buying an adventure even if you don't plan on using it so you can get a handle on how to format story entries, encounters and such.

3) There is no discount if physical books are owned. However there is a flat discount in general and more if you purchase the bundles. Very soon they are replacing their complete collection with three packages. One of which is complete essentials which gives you a 15% discount and contains only the rules relevant books (no adventures, maps and such)
