Is it possible to change the image pointer used for links?

Yes, but you need to do it in an extension. And it is for all links.

Have a look at the Theme_Wood.ext extension file that comes with FG. In graphics\buttons there are some link graphics. These are set in the graphics\graphics_misc.xml file.
