View Full Version : New User: Moving the Map

I have only recently picked up Fantasy Grounds to run Rise of the Runelords for Pathfinder for my gaming group. I do however, have a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to in the forums.
When I want to move a battlemap around, if I click and move the map it moves the frame instead. I seem to have to click on the little icon in the bottom right corner and drag it around. Is there a way that I can just click and drag my map around? The little icon is driving me completely insane. Also is there a way to get the battlemaps to load at the size of my screen? They seem to load at full size sometimes which forces me to use Ctrl and click to drag the frame into a smaller size that fits my screen. Both of these things are extremely cumbersome after the N'th time.
Please Help.

Hi Trithlis, welcome to the community.
More information on how to resize and move images here (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/Images). Sounds like you might not be aware of the middle mouse button scroll. As for the map size, by default images open at their maximum size. To quickly make the map smaller right click and select Resize and then smaller size. You can then drag the window around and make it whatever size you want using the usual methods. There is also this extension (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?43672-Extension-Sticky-windows) which might be of use to you.

Hey Tsithlis the maps will also remember the last size you had them at next time you open them (on a map by map basis).

Thank you, this extension was very helpful. Would there be an extension for someone who perhaps lacks a middle mouse button? I use a trackball mouse and have only two buttons. Is there perhaps an extension that would let me hold like alt, or something else or maybe be able to rebind this function to some other key?

There's no extension that does that I'm afraid and there's no key binding option in FG. I don't know if an extension could be written to so such a thing. Holding the mouse pointer over the viewport and moving the mouse horizontally or vertically is the only other method that I am aware of.

Many mice and trackballs with only two buttons will mimic a middle button when you press both buttons at the same time.

Oh well, thanks for the help. Perhaps I shall look into how extensions are made and see if such an option could be possible. It strikes me as odd that in the age of app development that moving a map inside a window is not more eloquently designed. Even in the windows environment moving something inside the windows is intuitive to clicking and dragging. To move the window one must actually click and drag the window itself. My programming days are some 20 years gone now but even back then this would be considered sloppy design work. Also who doesn't allow keybinding for functions that could be lacking in some hardware such as scroll wheels and middle mouse buttons. This is basically standard industry practice. Never the less, I am enjoying many other aspects of the program so far even if it has some minor annoyances. Thanks everyone for the feedback and I look forward to many great session with my group.

This seems to check distance in fantasy grounds. At least with my mouse. Perhaps I can find a mouse program that will allow me to use some macros or something.

So, it does what is normal for clicking both left and right. Another thing to try - can you push on the trackball? Sometimes there is a pressure switch underneath and you can use the ball as the middle mouse button (this is also used for most mice that have wheels).

You can also left click and drag on the navigation button in the lower right of each image to pan around a map.

I was able to affect a solution. I use the Logitech Trackman Marble now (as they discontinued their best trackball the T-RB22 and mine broke). I was able to download software that made the tiny buttons above the main buttons able to be set to different functions. I was able to make one of them the “middle mouse” button. They are a bit difficult to click but it is a better solution than the icon on the map I think. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. Hopefully this may help someone else who doesn’t have a traditional mouse.

I was aware of this, but I use a projector to project the maps for the player’s version and that icon is usually just off screen or slightly more difficult to get to than just grabbing the map itself.
