Inexperienced player wants online 5e play

I am familiar with dungeons and dragons but want to learn more online. I'm not familiar with this website and I am a little confused. I did read that you accept newbies for online play and I am wondering how I can sign up and hopefully get into a 5e game. How do I sign up to the proper game? I'm not sure how online play would work so just getting started is very confusing to me.

Might I recommend Fantasy Grounds College. It is a great place to start and learn D&D, among other systems, and how to get the most from your Fantasy Grounds experience. They provide classes on character creation, combat, role play, and etc. You will also network with other players and DMs, which more than likely will see you joined in to a game.
