I've been racking my brain on how to put a monk's deflect missiles into an effect that the player can activate at the begining of combat Help Please

Create an effect as follows DMG: -1d10 [-DEX] [-LVL] and place it on the attacker just before they roll damage.

This didn't work for me. To get it to work, I had to change the Targeting Field to "Targets", and the Expend? Field to "On next roll". You just have to remember to target the shooter/opponent right before clicking the effect.

So it did work for you. When I said place it on the target that's what I meant by changing the targeting to targets. Also you can drag and drop it on the target too.

How might this be adjusted to be effective against only Range damage?

Sorry to ask this in this way but I'm not a programmer in the least bit. So when you say add ranged to the above DMG: -1d10 [-DEX] [-LVL] do you mean just add it with a comma and the word ranged, at the very end?
