Complete newbie at this if there are any videos on what to do that would be great. In other words if someone can point the way that would be great.

Your best bet is to watch videos on how to use Fantasy Grounds in general and try playing in some games (such as some of the games being listed in LFG forum, or upcoming FG Con in April). There are several other resources for learning how to use FG: videos stickied in forums by game system (5E has the most), user manual in web site front page downloads menu, wiki link in web site menu, ...

From there, you should try looking at CoreRPG and MoreCore as possible ways to run your own game with a generic ruleset framework. These may be sufficient for what you want. Also, search through the forums and take a look on the wiki to see if there is already a community project for the game system you are interested in.

If you are set on building your own ruleset, then you will need to get into the FG API, and learning to code for it. So, once you have a grasp of how FG works, you can look at the Developer Guide on the wiki to begin learning a bit about how to customize. Then, I would suggest looking at some of the smaller extensions, such as theme extensions, to get an idea of how to mod the system. The mods for FG use the exact same tags and APIs as building a new game system framework (ruleset). Once you've played around with the extensions and tried a couple changes of your own, you can take a simpler ruleset (such as Fate Core, Numenera or one close to your system), and begin to start customizing a full-fledged game system.

The summary is to learn the program in small steps, and you will have a much better experience.

For creating characters in CoreRPG have a look at the CoreRPG example character sheets here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?23138-Share-Game-System-Character-Sheets

The chances are you'll want to use MoreCore as you'll have more dice rolling and character sheet options. Have a look at the info in the MoreCore thread: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?34860-MoreCore-Ruleset
