View Full Version : Challenge rating for Homebrew monsters?

Is there a forum or thread somewhere that can "rate" a homebrew monster's CR?

There appears to be a couple of simple ones, but none that take into account critters that have multiple or complex attacks. The DMG just says "average damage per round, but how do you calculate that when AC varies as does saves?

Are there "peer review" forums to verify you have the right CRs for monsters?

Giantitp and ENWorld are commons places I've seen people ask for such advice. People will get very detailed there. You're welcome to ask here, but I think you will get more rigorous responses on those sites.

You will also find that many of the bloggers have extensive posts on rating monsters etc. I think Sly Flourish, The Angry GM, The Alexandrian and others are likely candidates.

Look on P. 274 of the DMG, there is a pretty detailed section on how to rate a new mob. I have used, and it works well

EDIT: Sorry, I think I read your post wrong, amd maybe you already looked at that

I've followed that, but I find combinations of magic and multiple physical attacks arent handled very well. What does average damage per round mean? Does that assume every hit succeeds and all saves are fail? That figure is hard to calculate as ACs and saves vary depending on characters.

It does assume all attacks hit and all saves are failed :)
There are also calculations for how many time you can use the spell etc. But not sure if those are from the DMG or one of the blogs I mentioned.

Thank you. That's why I want to get my monster checked out.
