View Full Version : http vs https and Search results

Starting a couple of days ago I have noticed that sometimes when I follow links, and when I use the Google site search link from the menu, that the links I'm given take me to a VBulletin version of the thread that looks like;
21776

I also noticed this with the links in my signature. I figured out that for some reason some of those are http links and the troublesome ones are https links. (I've fixed this in my signature.) But, when I created these links (even since this problem has shown up) I simply cut and pasted from a link from the themed/good version of the forum post (not the VBulletin ugly version).

As I said, I've solved this for my sig links, but I'm still put out by the search results links. Any ideas/suggestions?

Some browsers are set to prefer or force HTTPS over HTTP. One is more private than the other. If there are issues, it could very well be a third party looking to closely watch. With HTTPS they only know the URL, not the content. HTTP they can see everything.

I can't reproduce it by going to http or https separately; however, we generally prefer all links to be in https format since we have a store attached.

Here are two links that I would think would give identical results. Does anyone get different results;

I do. Chrome v63.

Try this:

Go to the http version and set your bulletin style to FGResponsive. Then retry the links. Mine look the same but it does appear that I could get them to use different themes for http and https. This is likely due to a cookie being saved with your preference for each one independently.

I sort of figured it out.

Apparently https and search results are giving me the mobile version of the site. Their is a link at the bottom to "Full Site" which takes me to the better site.

No, anyone know how I can get it to default to the Full Site? It seems to keep reverting to the mobile site.

Both links take me to the same page as well. I'm not clear on whether you are accessing from a mobile device (in which case it will default to the mobile view) or from a PC in which case it will default to the site preference that you have set from the drop down at the bottom left of the page. Having said that I use FG Quick so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I'm not on a mobile device. Though I may have used my phone once or twice when this started, not sure.

It is definitely the theme. And I can set it to Quick or Responsive and it works as expected, until I follow a link from the Site Search page. Then it goes back to mobile even for the https links like above.

I'm investing site cookies at the moment, will let you know how that goes.

Thanks all for the help.

Ok, solved.
There was a site cookie named "bb_userstyleid" that was only set for secure connections (i.e. https links) for fantasygrounds.com.

I removed that cookie, exited the browser and relaunched and now the site search links maintain the active theme. And the cookie has not (yet) been recreated.
