View Full Version : LFP: Starfinder: Dead Suns

DMReckless
December 9th, 2017, 18:10
FG License: Ultimate
Game System: Starfinder

Time Zone: EST
Day of week and time: Sunday 1:15-3:45
If new game, planned start date: Game Started 2/11/18
Planned Duration & Frequency: Weekly, 2 1/2-3 hours; players need to be on time due to short duration
Term: Long Term. Players need to be able to reliably show up

Text or Voice: Text
Voice software used: N/A

Roleplay & Combat mix: 50/50 Published Adventure Path
Number of Players in game & needed: Need up to 1 more player, have 5
Character starting level & equipment: Start at level 1, 1000 credits
Character restrictions: Core and Legacy Races, Contemplative, Dragonkin, Drow, Formian, Space Goblin, Ikeshti, Kalo, Maraquoi, Nuar, Reptoid, Ryphorian, Skittermander, Verthani, Witchwyrd, Wrikreechee; I will also have several pregens available for people. Additionally, if people want, they can tell me (example) "I want to play a Xenoseeker Theme Dwarven Exocortex Mechanic" or "I wanna play a butt-kicking Vesk." and I'll create the character for you as an option. The only real restriction I'm going to make is that we have to have PCs for each of the Starship Roles. Starship combat really breaks down if you don't have the proper skills.

Details of your scenario: The PCs are new recruits of the Starfinder Society, just enroot to Absalom Station, the core of the Pact Worlds, via the shuttle Okimoro. Are they destined to become the Society's new champions, or a small footnote in the annals of time? Dead Suns is Paizo's (first) official Adventure Path for the Starfinder game, and so far they have published 3 of the 6 adventure path books. By the time we finish the first, they'll likely have the 4th out, and by the time we get there. they'll probably have the last 2 done.

We will be using the wonderful extension and modules from Samarex, and probably will switch over to the official Ruleset when it's released. I will be inputting the AP myself. My home internet is pretty bad, so I will be running the game via a Hamachi server from the local library. This restricts the time I can run the game, so please apply only if you can commit to be on time and available at least 3 play days a month.

About me: I've been GMing since the 70s, mostly for family and local groups in the early stages, but have been running online games for the past 6+ years as the local groups have moved on. I've been running on Fantasy Grounds for about 2 years, and have a pretty good grasp (although I'm always learning new things.) I ran Pathfinder Demos for Paizo at GenCon last year, and am thus very familiar with (at least the basics) of the game system; although having run Pathfinder since the alpha playtest I might occasionally get the two mixed up. I tend to play the rules pretty much as they're written/intended with few house rules. For Starfinder, I likely will just go with what Paizo has written except when we get to an area not covered by the rules. I enjoy roleplaying, and prefer that players are engaged both in and out of combat.

This sounds like a lot of fun and I could definitely consistently play at that time on Sundays. I have a friend that doesn't frequent the forums but he would be able to consistently play on Sundays as well. We both have a full license of FG.

I'm on my phone and can make a more formal player application later today.

*edit*
I will probably play a bounty hunter operative who is a jack of all trades or an outlaw envoy. My friend will most likely play a vesk soldier.

*Edit 2: Return of the Edit*

Definitely playing an Envoy. Party face, party buffer, wheeler and dealer. His social skillset would fill out the Captain role nicely.

I would interested in the Saturday Game.

Blahness98
December 9th, 2017, 22:32
Color me interested. Either day should work for me as I don't need to make work runs until early evening. Text only does not other me as I run a pair of games which are text only. Allows for deeper role play.

Don't really care what role I would play as I will work with the group. Will be the first Starfinder game that I will play, but I have read the CRB. Just a heads up, I was working on entering Dead Suns as a game I would run sometime in the future. Granted I don't remember anything I converted, but figured I'd be up front about reading some of it.

I am also interested, the only available day for me would be Saturday tho.

Magentawolf
December 9th, 2017, 23:44
I would also be interested, and while Sunday would be preferred, I'm available in either time slot. This would be my first official Starfinder game, but I've been doing D&D / Pathfinder for ages.

First pick would likely be a mechanic, leaning towards the gunner or engineer ship roles.

Looks like we're about tied on Saturday and Sunday with 4 each. Anyone else looking for a Starfinder game?

Blahness98
December 13th, 2017, 02:06
Looks like you'll just have to run two games..

GMSean
December 13th, 2017, 02:53
I would definitely be interested. Sunday would be my preferred day, if the options still exist.

DMReckless

Looks like we're going with Sundays. Initial post has been edited to reflect this.

For those Sundays work for, please start the collaboration on character concepts here.

I have two bouncing around in my head...

Mako Shank ...space goblin experiment by a "Corporation"/"Entity" to create a vessel capable of interfacing with machines. It didn't work. Not entirely as expected, that is...

Per'ii ...drow reality theorist...a solarian who focuses almost entirely on their research into space, time, and their intertwined relationship with the entirety of the galaxy...

Updated my original post on the top page one.

Blahness98
December 14th, 2017, 03:27
I don't really have a good idea on what I was going to run. Have a themeless Ryphorian exocortex mechanic that I am starting to like. Oddly, not an engineer, more of a hacker.

Otherwise there is the human ace pilot operative..

Magentawolf
December 14th, 2017, 15:23
I've got two ideas for a Mechanic going around in my head right now. One is a human, ex-Navy engineer type, and another is a Ysoki tinkerer or sorts.

GMSean
December 14th, 2017, 17:57
Okay, so it sounds like we have a lot of competition for a mechanic. Since I have a few concepts floating in my head, I will shelve Mako for now (we'll play someday, little buddy) and go with one of these two:

Per'ii -- drow relativity theorist...solarion focused entirely on gravitic manipulation of time and space

*unnamed* -- a hedonistic mystic (not a healer) with a penchant for darker soul magics...likely mindbreaker with a strong leaning towards necromantic magics (fatigue, fear, etc). Very control oriented.

Both of these probably fill a science role on a starship

Blahness98
December 15th, 2017, 02:26
Think I will stick with the pilot.

RustyAngel
December 15th, 2017, 05:45
Guess I can run a soldier then, not too familiar with the system yet so maybe it'll be good to go with something generic for starters.

Plutwo
December 15th, 2017, 12:42
Looks like we potentially have the following based on responses from the thread :

Witchwyrd Icon Envoy - high charisma party buffer, enemy debuffer, party face, starship captain

Vesk Bounty Hunter Soldier - high strength, tank, heavy weapons, heavy melee, starship gunner

A Mechanic, race undetermined yet - Technological badass, may or may not have a robrobro, starship engineer.

Human Ace Pilot Operative - Best starship pilot in the system. Probably pretty skilled in most other areas as well.

Solarian or Mystic resident Cosmic Being - starship scientist.

@RustyAngel - Will this Sunday game work for you? In a previous post you mentioned that you'd only be available on Saturday.

Hopefully Sunday does work, looking forward to helping your soldier tear apart a battlefield for fun and profit.

As far as Mystic/Solarian, I am open to either as the group believes would be a solid fit.

I think the solarian may prove to have too much of a build-time involved, but maybe not.

The mystic would be tossing fear and the occasional mind thrust right away, but no heals. (She picks up some minor ones down the road, but its not a priority on the concept.)

Opinions on either?

RustyAngel
December 15th, 2017, 18:24
Actually seeing as the time was set, Sunday doesn't work for me. Currently running in a Hell's Rebels game that runs 1-5, so I'm going to have to bow out and give my slot to someone else. Thanks just the same guys, and have fun.

Play whatever you'll have fun with.

Having said that, my opinion would be Mystic gives the party a specialist in Mysticism. With some Computers skills a solid science officer. Mystic spells which are a big deal. A few feats into Longarms and a Mystic can still put up decent damage while still being a crowd control beast.

My Envoy will often make it so everyone on the team will have an effective bonus of +3 to +4 to hit specific targets in combat, making even characters who aren't direct damage specialists hit far more often than they normally would.

Following Magentawolf's lead, I present blush number 1 of Cassandalae'wren Draegoth (we can call her Cassandalae). She comes from a noble drow family, arms dealers one and all, except Cassandalae'wren. She inherited an aunt's fortune (she was her favorite) and "squandered" it (according to her mother) needlessly researching useless arcane drivel. Cassandalae, ever mindful of only her wants and goals, didn't care and pursued her denied arts. Turns out, they were truly dark arts. Cassandalae has taken a particular attachment to a dark and forbidden entity, one she has chosen to not name publically. And this being seems okay with remaining in the darkness and helping guide the hedonistic young drow on a quest for further esoteric arts pertaining to the fragility of the mind and the enslavement and commandment of departed spirits and discarded mortal shells.

Mom and dad have, more or less, cut Cassandalae off from her trust when they discovered that she was communing with Nyarlathotep. It was too much, even for a drow. Afterall, they were in the business of weapon supply, not dabbling with corpses. With little left to her name, but a potent education and ridiculously sharp wit about her, Cassandalae'wren has ventured into the galaxy, ready to drink its pleasures until she is satiated. And she is never satiated.

Race: Drow (female)
Class: Mystic (Mindbender)
Theme: Priest
Alignment: CN (but not disruptive CN...she is purely hedonistic and interested in what benefits her. She can be reasoned with, bargained with, and dealt with rationally. She is not "Chaotic Crazy" she is "Incredibly Selfish Neutral")

Name: Dr. Salem, Redford
Race: Witchwyrd
Class: Envoy
Theme: Icon
Alignment: LN
Age: Stopped counting after 300.
Height: 6'6''
Weight: 270lbs
Diety: Abadar

Dr. Salem has spent the last several decades bounty hunting around the Pact Worlds with his Dragonkin pal, dragging the scum they catch back to AbadarCorp for profit and self publishing adventure novels on the major infospheres for additional credits. Dr. Salem's action / adventure series is largely based on the exploits of himself as the sidekick to the mountain of scaley fury that is his companion. Fan favorites of the series include such titles as Faster Than the Speed of Fight and Khadrius Wyrmstar'r and the Temple of Boom.

Dr. Salem puts great value in the agreements he makes with other whether they be verbal, or documented. He is a man of his word and he expects others to fulfill their agreements to him. He gets a certain pleasure in drafting very precise contracts that ensure his dealings with others pan out in ways he expects them to.

More personal knowledge of Dr. Salem can be discovered over the course of play.

Out of curiosity, what sort of a timeline are we looking at here, regarding this?

From the first post, it looks like the first weekend in January.

DMReckless

I have experience with pathfinder and dnd. The time works perfectly with me. I am willing to fill with whatever the group needs. I don't know if your excepting still it seems you have 4-5 interested players already. Just let me know and I will set up a character today

darkdante
January 5th, 2018, 23:23
I would love to join, currently looking at making a Technomancer or maybe and Envoy, class / race is still being determined. I have the core rule book and can have a lvl 1 character created relatively quickly.

brassones20
January 6th, 2018, 00:14
Any Chance you still have a spot open? I'm looking to roll a Dragonkin, Bounty Hunter, soldier that can tank for the party. Hopefully progressing into power armor. I've been playing Starfinder for a couple of months and would love to try it out on FG. I also own a copy of the core rule book / alien archive and have an excel spread sheet with stats if that helps.

I assume we'll be getting Hamachi and server login info sometime prior, here? ;)

DMReckless
January 7th, 2018, 00:03
I'm having Hamachi issues, but my home internet seems to be much more cooperative, so, at least for tomorrow, I'll be running on my home net.

The FG id is "epic bard loud gate"

The game has room for 1 more PC, although 1-2 of the accepted players are in flux currently, so there may be up to 3 spots open. I'll update as soon as I have more info from the players involved.

Blahness98
January 7th, 2018, 00:22
Well, I will be there with my operative.

DMReckless

Plutwo
January 7th, 2018, 17:52
My friend and I will be logging in shortly.

DMReckless
January 7th, 2018, 18:44
It is now 1/2 hour past the game start time, and I have 2 players logged in. I invite the others who have expressed interest to log in and set up characters.

Again, the FG code is "epic bard loud gate"

DMReckless
January 7th, 2018, 20:34
We only had 2 players show up. If you wish to play, are able to show up on time, and present your character here, we will look to try again with the start of this campaign next week.

Magentawolf and Blahness98 have spots, they hung out and hung in there while we waited over 2 hours for people to show up.

The other 4 slots are opened for the first 4 people to show up when we start next week. 1:15 PM EST Sunday Jan14th.

Saw you trying to connect and get d/c'd. Unfortunately. Magenta was the only other to show again. For now, dropping out of trying to run this game in this time slot with these parameters. I will keep you and Magenta in the loop on any further attempts.

Blahness98
January 14th, 2018, 18:40
I can swing Saturdays at the same time. Rusty and Kwarner also showed interest on Saturdays. I don't know if Magenta could run Saturdays, but you could have a full crew.

Hell, I might even be able to snag another player. Just let me know.

If you're still planning to run this I'd like to join. I'm available on Sundays and (probably, not completely certain) Saturdays.

Thanks for the quick reply! I just stumbled on a fan Starfinder SRD site so I am still learning, but yea I could help out in 1 or the other (leaning toward a soldier (sharpshooter), but I would still like to explore all of the options). I'm currently involved in an active 5E group and have never done pathfinder before but this looks right up my alley if the group is willing to help with the transition (Looking at the character sheets there doesn't appear to be too many major differences)? Maybe I missed the post, but what date and time is the first scheduled session set for? Let me know thanks!

We still are accepting players. I would like to get to 5 but could probably make it work with 4 solid players. I will open the table back up this coming Sunday to get new characters entered.

I think we're pretty close to getting the official release, and that may increase enthusiasm.

I've never played Starfinder, but I've been playing D&D in its various forms since 1989 or 1990, and have experience with various other systems.

Buying the book now, this was just the excuse to finally commit to that.

I'm happy to go for a soldier type or magic. I'll have a better idea after I get a chance to start going through the book tonight. The only things I don't really like to do is play healer, or party face.

That is the nice thing that I have been reading, there really isn't too big of a need for a healer. You'd be going off of stamina points and hope that pool is big enough. All else fails, 10 minute rest and a resolve point get all stamina back.

Oops missed your post on here too XIIGage. So that makes it

SirGraystone: Lashura Envoy (Captain)
Blahness98: Human Operative (Pilot)
Magentawolf: Android Mechanic (Engineer)
Archamus: The Technomancer (Science Officer) sounds like my cup of tea, so that is what I'm aiming for. Still need to read more and pick a species and what not.
XIIGage: ?

Any idea what you want to play XIIGage? I know soldier, with the role of Gunner is still available. If that sounds like something you just wouldn't enjoy though, and you want to be something else, or the science officer, let me know I don't mind going with some kind of combat specialist.

I'm going with an Android, but when it comes to the character's appearance I'm really focusing on how nearly all, but not all Androids are humanoid. If you're not ok with that just let me know.

Basic Background:
XIV's soul coalesced into a newly constructed body on Aballon. After allowing the designer several months of testing to determine how well XIV's design functioned, XIV was given some funds and released to follow its own interests.

The world XIV found itself on was fascinating, and XIV focus on trying to see as much of it, as quickly as it could. After nearly a year of this the wonder had faded and XIV felt the urge to see other planets. It decided the Starfinder Society would be an excellent way to make that happen.

Appearance:

XIV is an android, but not the typical human analogue variety. Its design is based on attempts to create something better than humans; or possibly just physical expression of resentment and an example of how some Androids seek to separate themselves from their former masters.

XIV is short in stature (5 feet) with a delicate-some would say emaciated or skeletal-frame. It weighs more than most beings with similar proportions would, as its design uses as little biological material as possible; instead focusing on technological equivalents.

Down its spine are small spike-like protuberances that occasionally expel small quantities of nanites from their hollowed tips. These are a functional feature, and the primary means by which XIV uses its technomantic abilities to interact with magic and technology.

Its skin is a dull gray that initially feels solid to the touch, but is pliable under pressure. Similar in nature, but much stiffer than a newtonian fluid. There are no visible ears on XIV, and no mouth located on its head. There is an easily seen slit in its throat, which is where it takes in nourishment. Its voice however emanates from a sub-dermal organ in the face where the mouth would be.

XIV's upper body and arms are humanoid, but extremely thin, and longer than appears natural for its size, with three long delicate fingers on each hand. It's legs however are not humanoid. Beneath XIV's long robes are four thin legs similar to those of a Formian, but without the elongated abdomen seen with that insect-like species.

The typical Android glowing circuitry is readily apparent most everywhere on XIV's body starting from the neck down, but is absent from the surface of the skull-like head.

We are seeking a replacement character for this AP. We are looking for someone to fill the gunner role in starship combat; we have an envoy/captain, mechanic/engineer, operative/pilot, and technomancer/science officer.
