View Full Version : FG Disconnects?

Hey, guys. So last night as I was hosting a game I noticed throughout the game players were getting disconnected. They would automatically reconnect pretty quickly so it didn't disrupt the game too much but it was odd. I also noted the night before when players were creating characters they were getting disconnected pretty frequently as well. I streamed the game last night and the stream was very stable, no issues with the internet disconnecting at least.

Any thoughts as to why the FG disconnects? Not sure what other detail to post. Otherwise it was an awesome session! Just curious if I should be doing something on my end before next game. Thanks.

Sounds like more of a network problem, on wired or wifi? Was it the same players each time while others were rock solid? They might have wifi problems or internet latency.

Some applications are more sensitive and others more resilient wrt to internet quality.

Thanks, guys. Its just weird. My setup hasn't changed at all and I've not seen this issue much at all before. On occasion I've had wifi go out but then OBS goes down, etc.. It was only FG that was doing it the last few nights. Nylanfs it is wifi but its pretty darn solid and given I was not dropping any frames in the OBS stream, I don't think it was my internet. All the guys were dropping on occasion but not always each one at the same time. Maybe I should just reboot my wifi as I haven't done that in a while. I know the network guy at my old company told me it was a good practice do it every so often. See if that helps.

Check also that you are not sharing too much with your players. That also can cause disruption if they are running low on memory.

Hmmm... Good thought. In this case it was a one-shot so I had very little shared in terms of maps, tokens, etc... However.... Now that I think about it, there is one thing it might be. I allow most all types of characters/sources for character creation. So, I have the PHB, Volo's, EE supplement, heroic races, midguard heroes, Xanathar's, and pretty much every other option open and the player version shared with everyone. I wonder if, after character creation I should close all of them or at least unshare them? Of course, if a player tries to click on a link to something like Xanathar's that they used for character creation and I have closed it they will get prompted that the module won't open. However, that could very well be the issue as I have purchased virtually every resource available for character creation include all of Rob2e's supplements....

Also try and get an idea of what's happening when the player disconnects - have you just shared something, or have they just opened a module?

This is more than likely due to your upload connection - as different players have disconnected. As damned says some apps, especially FG, can be more sensitive to disconnects than others. It sounds like you're getting a disconnect, but the re-try then works? That is, they player doesn't drop out of the campaign to the startup screen?

This could also be due to FG getting overloaded at a particular point - but then all players would experience the disconnect at roughly the same point. I believe the check is every 1 minute - so if all players get a disconnect within 1 minute of each other then it's due to a general overload on the network affecting FG data or the FG application itself.

It definitely seemed like most all of them were disconnected when the issue happened but not to the launch screen. They would reconnect automatically. So, it sounds like it was a general overload on the network affecting the FG data or the app itself. I'll go back and look at the video to see when the disconnects tended to happen. During the game I don't recall specific things happening that triggered it but perhaps going back to the videotape I will see some kind of pattern.

On other thing... My upload speed is pretty steady at 10 mb when I run a speedtest unless its dropping at times that I'm not aware of. About 100 down and 10 up.

But you are pushing streaming video at the same time. That is a vast hit
