Question about Hero Lab Exported .hlfg files

First I love the software, and I was able to download and use Character Converter, etc. This is just most a curiosity...

Why do we need a converter? Just seems like Hero Lab would work with company so that it's Fantasy Ground output file would feed directly into Fantasy Grounds. Just as a new GM, I find it somewhat fiddly as all my players use the Hero Lab software.

Again, I am on my first month, so a new, but what is a .hlfg file? And are they even still used since it now gets converted into .xml?

All the Hero Lab export and save files are XML files, but they have a completely data structure than FG character XML files. This, a converter is needed to change the HL data structure to the FG data structure.
