View Full Version : What GURPs would you run/play with official support?

Hector Trelane

If an official GURPs ruleset and supporting libraries for skills, advantages, disadvantages, and various rules tables were all available, what GURPs settings would you run or play? (Not that each of those settings would be immediately available.) Starting this thread to separately discuss demand for GURPs in FG (started elsewhere by ronnke).

EDIT: A key question for SJG / ronnke: will GURPS Magic be officially supported? Seems like a must-have for any fantasy setting.

I'll go first answering my own questions:

Games I own and would run:

GURPs Imperial Rome
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21146

GURPs Celtic Myth
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21147

(These two above could be run separately but more interestingly could be run in an interconnected fashion.)

GURPs Goblins (the best setting you never heard of) -- this has con one-shots written all over it :D
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21148

On my bucket list to play:

GURPs Atomic Horror
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21149

GURPs Traveller
https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21150

Dungeon Fantasy
Reign of Steel

...Continuing on my to play wish list:

GURPs Autoduel would be pretty cool too.

GURPS In Nomine would be great.

I am considering GURPS fantasy, or Dungeon Fantasy (not sure about the difference though). Maybe a modern setting with some "weird" elements, or a post-apocalyptic setting.

I just saw that difference between GURPS Fantasy v Dungeon Fantasy discussed on a G+ thread here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/110424884856704685282/posts/GT3u3ouWjzE

Reign of Steel (http://www.warehouse23.com/products/gurps-classic-reign-of-steel) posted above by Andraax above certainly is post-apocalyptic. In Nomine is modern with "weird".

I've run mostly one-shots (http://www.themook.net/gamegeekery/convention/#list) for the past few years, of wildly varied settings and tone. Official support for Fantasy Grounds would make that much, much easier for me to do in an online format, so I guess my answer would be "all of the GURPS"? The two in the forefront of my lobes for the last few outings have been one-shot adventures of "The Crow" and "Streets of Fire," but usually a few weeks before game time something else intrudes and I end up running that instead.

In a perfect world, I would love to be in a position to run a monthly one-shot online, different adventure every time, so yeah... lots of GURPS.

Thanks. :) I've had good success with movie/TV-inspired one-shots (Aliens, Warriors, Game of Thrones, etc.), and I think "Streets of Fire" in particular could be a lot of fun... but for that one I for sure would like to get my hands dirty with the Sound Extension. Can't do "Streets..." without a soundtrack!

On your list, it's good to see both Goblins and Celtic Myth. Forgotten gems!

Well, I already use FG to play any genre I want, so official support won't make me any more likely to play. However, official support will make the general gaming experience much better. :)

Ha Ha! Crom laughs at your one game a month, he laughs from his mountain. When I die, I will go before Crom and he will ask...what is the riddle of GURPS? If I don't know, then he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me. :P

Count me in on "The Crow" game. I'll queue up some of The Cure and then I'm ready to "fire it up". :)

That's a question I cannot answer. I would like to think so as it would be awesomely useful. Magic is however supported with the current ruleset, it just involves and export from GCA or manual entry.

There are so many ideas I have I don't think I could honestly choose just 1 or even a couple BUT if the GURPS "Basic Set" content was available, like the D&D 5e Core stuff, you could pretty much run anything.

I play primarily with Gurps Low tech, Fantasy, etc.

If I was to run a game I might be interested in one sort of like Thundarr the Barbarian, i.e. science and sorcery.
So Low Tech, Fantasy, Magic and pulling in bits from other books.

Lol, fair enough (though maybe that should be "Kromm"?). Once I got rollin', maybe do something like 1st Saturday of month, one-shot, 3rd Saturday, ongoing campaign.

Yes. After manually copying over passages from like 70 different skills/traits across 4 characters, a thousand times Yes!

Every skill and trait has a brown "eye in the pyramid" icon next to it on the character sheet that opens a small Notes box, I think? Maybe that's non-standard, oopsie. At work, can't check atm!

Having rules details within FG has never been an issue for me (/us). If we need the text from one of the books for some reason, I just cut & paste into chat from the PDF. I suppose it'd be nice to have all the skills fluff in FG already, but it really won't make a big difference for us, due to the way we've always played.

Just checked and you're right. It only appears on character sheets though, not on NPC sheets (which is the reason I hadn't seen it). Thanks!

Btw see this thread (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?31052-Interest-Check-Hillfolk-DramaSystem-amp-Eagle-s-Twilight&highlight=eagle%27s+twilight) a G+ page for a Drama System game in the twilight of Roman Britain a few decades earlier and a few hundred leagues north of your setting. [Hisses under his breath:] Shh! This is the part where we're encouraging SJG to commit to official support!

Back in my glory days (when I actually had time to game) I knew the GURPS rules well enough to do what you're describing here, but these days it'd sure be handy to have the rules pre-entered. It'd also make GURPS (like any ruleset) more accessible to newcomers. But the biggest benefit, I suspect, is cutting down time creating (N)PCs by having skills etc drag-and-droppable.

This! Most of my games are introducing GURPS newbies, so for them to able to look over their sheet, wonder what "Savoir-Faire" or "Brachiator" is, and click a button to have the exact text of the book right there to read? Priceless.

I hate wikis because I can't use them like I use Portal. Want to have stats for the character that I can glance while not running FG but don't want the PCs to see this? Bam. I can do that. Have an interesting plot idea for a character that the Players are ignorant of? And so on. Is OP perfect? Heck no. I actually would like to be able to download the whole thing and run it off my own site rather than use them, but you work with what you've got.

Seems that this is one of GURPS' strengths--enabling niche games like historical periods. I love this kind of thing. As Ken Hite says, "History is the world's greatest roleplaying supplement."

More historical gaming. Good stuff!

There's plenty of amazing drama in straight history, but an option here is to fold in some light fantasy elements with a supplement such as Ken Hite's Nazi Occult: http://www.warehouse23.com/products/the-nazi-occult

I say light since historical Nazi's were thick with occult craziness. Half the book is about the strictly historical record, as some of it gets into fun hypotheticals.

Correct you are -- a GURPS thread. The core rules support combat at that tech level quite well. And here is a GURPS WWII source book:

Of course one of the hallmarks of GURPS is that you can mix and match resources and supplements in either direction.

In particular, for Camelot, would you use GURPS, go straight to Pendragon, or use a blend of the two? (I've scanned Pendragon and arguably it does what GURPS can't, and GURPS does what it doesn't attempt to do.)

I currently run a reoccurring GURPS Fantasy Survival game using converted aspects of RIFTS and Palladium Fantasy for my world. The players get pulled through RIFTS from different times and dimensions in the megaverse and end up in the wilderness of my low-tech world with only anything organic they had on/in them. If they were mostly cyborg or something, those parts "magically" get living fleshy parts. They need to link up with others brought over here is such a way, integrate, survive, and adventure in the process of either deciding to settle in or find a way back "home."

I use elements of GURPS Basic Set, Dungeon Fantasy, GURPS Low Tech, GURPS Magic, and GURPS Martial Arts and a few from GURPS High/Ultra tech

When I have time I run a home grown post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy world so I use the Basics and a smattering of other things for my niches so really anything official would make my day. I'm not interested in auto playing anything but due to the sporadic ability to get my group together I'm constantly having to refresh my brain on rules or quite often just make one up based on what I already know. Thankfully GURPS is good for that and my group isn't a bunch of rules Nazis.

For the original poster of this thread, what would I hope would be supported from the get-go? Clearly the Basic set rules would be ideal. Being able to drag and drop equipment would be nice, but with the work that Ronke has done along with the script that allows a GCA character to be exported - I've been happy to use what I have that wasn't supported by anything. I had to create my own "GURPS HIGH TECH ADVENTURE GUNS" data table for use with GCA for use with my Old West Campaign (if anyone wants that, message me). I've also modified the GURPS HIGH TECH data file for GCA to include the Glock variant pistols listed in GURPS HIGH TECH, but were not included in the data tables. The reason I did that was to be able to have 10mm pistols for use with my current GURPS CHROME CITY campaign set in 2048 in California. And yes, it is a a Cyberpunk campaign. ;)

But the biggies that I'd want to see supported for use with GURPS campaigns would be:

GURPS BASIC SET (for the character building stuff)
GURPS HIGH TECH
GURPS LOW TECH
GURPS ULTRA-TECH

Basically, anything and everything to get the equipment lists populated for use with GURPS. For me, that's the REAL drag when it comes to setting up support material for any campaign.

Brand new to GURPS and to FG. It is so cool that the gaming system makes this kind of question possible.

Loved Brin's Uplift series too - would play in that universe for certain.

Zombies of all types are (morbidly) fascinating and I would be interested in playing those supplements.

Traveller would be great!
