Hello all,

I would like to make a suggestion for an extension or a program improvement.

The problem is that fantasy ground is very limited in language support. If you would like to write in a language that is not English, you would get Gibberish. The best solution is to allow people to write in different language anywhere on the program. Sadly, I got the impression it is an extremely complicated project. So what I offer here is a compromise.

The goal is to allow writing in a language that is different from English. This text is for chat and story, not for the additional features.

The reason is to allow young people, who are not native English speakers, to play.

The program does wonder in automation. Thanks to that, we could avoid the need for a full translation.
My main problem is in the chat and story telling.

I would like to use the fantasy language fonts for actual real-life languages. I understood, from the support, that the fantasy language is scrambled.

we jumble the output characters prior to writing because some GMs said that players were able to decipher it when they saw words repeated over and over.
The suggestion is to feature an option to turn it on or off the scrambling for specific languages. In addition, I would like the ability to add a custom font (such as a link to folder).

This would allow anyone to use a custom language font for actual real-life purposes.
The English translation would be gibberish,

I am well aware this is a wonky solution, but it is the best I could think of for general use.
Off course this would have additional benefits of controlling your fantasy languages. That is why I'm offering this as a program improvement.

I am aware of projects like LPak*. The difference here is that I don't want translation. I would like the ability to write text in a language native to me.

If anyone have a better solution for my problem, I would be glad to hear about it.

Thank you all,
L32.

You can write anything you want right now.

If you need a custom font, then create a new language along with the font, and make sure all players have that language on their character sheets, so no one gets the "scrambled" version.

I think you misunderstood me.
I attached a screen shot to explain:

In the picture I wrote: the follwoing text is in Hebrew.
Below i wrote in Hebrew: המלל הבא כתוב בעברית
As you can see, The actual text is gibberish..

I thought it scrambled the font regardless. And the translation would only be viable if each character matched up to the English alphabet. Unless there is something I'm not understanding.

I showed an example for writing normally in a different language.
Yes, when you use the fantasy language, it scrambles the font regardless.
My suggestion is to allow the fantasy language to be used in substitution for actual language (in this example - Hebrew).
To do so, you need the ability to control which language is scrambled and the ability to add language fonts.

L32,

The Fantasy Grounds engine currently only supports 8859-1 single byte encoding, so it will be limited to 256 characters per font. I'm guessing (without any research) that the hebrew characters are not in the standard 256 character font ranges. We are looking at expanding to UTF-8 encoding for future versions, but have no timeline at this time.

Hebrew can be found in the ISO/IEC 8859-8 (Latin/Hebrew).
Regardless, this is just an example as I believe it can be used for others.

Hey there - unfortunately on the current engine there is only support for 8859-1 single byte encoding so even 8859-8 wont work....
There is a way that a community member MarianDz did for expanding language support here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?36627-Central-European-Languages-(CEL)-Fonts

He knows about that, LE. He said so in the first post. It won't solve his problem.

Thanks a LOT!
It works for me.
For those who might want to use it, please note.
Hebrew is written from right to left and this extension does not change the writing orientation.
Also, the fantasy language only works with English letters as they are working with Latin.
This can be changed, but requires a different extension.
You can follow the Tenians Language Chat Extension* and work from there.

What would be nice is the ability to use different fonts at times when needed. I was doing FG entry for a module recently and the text was mostly in English but it did had some text in Japanese right next. with an English translation next to it in a long text block.

Yes that is it I need to be able to do. Combine the text from several different non English specific fonts into a mostly English text field.
