View Full Version : Mac High Sierra Updates for Fantasy Grounds

The latest OSX update for Fantasy Grounds prevents Fantasy Grounds from launching properly. We have resolved this with the latest installer on our website but updating for people who already have it installed may take some manual steps in order to preserve your custom campaigns and personal data. For now, we recommend holding off on the High Sierra Mac Update.

Important: Before doing anything else, please make a backup of your FantasyGrounds.app file. Your custom campaigns and creations are stored within this file and you can access them to copy them over from one app package to another (described later).

Installing Fresh:
Use the Downloads > Mac OSX Installation and follow the instructions there.

Updating an existing WINE wrapper or installation:

Locate your FantasyGrounds.app file in Finder or in your Applications. If you are on Steam, launch Steam, go to Games Library and then right-click on Fantasy Grounds
Right-Click on Fantasy Grounds
Click on Show Package Contents
Double-Click on Wineskin
Click On "Set Screen Options"
Uncheck "Auto Detect GPU Info for Direct3D"
Click "Done"
Click "Quit"
close All the windows

Fantasy Grounds Should now Launch

Copying contents from a backup copy

On the current version of Fantasy Grounds, launch Fantasy Grounds and then click on the Folder icon on the launch screen. This will open a Finder Window and put the folder into the location where your custom content is stored. Look for folders like campaigns, portraits, modules, extensions and tokens. Make a note of the path within Finder.
Right-click on the FantasyGroundsBackup.app (your name might be different) and then click on Show Package Contents. Navigate to the same folder structure as the step above to find your old Data Folder. The starting folder should include a "drive_c" folder within the WINE package.

The settings change is not working for me in 10.13.1. Updating existing or fresh install.

After making a backup of any custom campaigns or other creations you've made, can you try the latest installer from here? https://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/FGMacInstallation.php

* I see that you said fresh install, but just wanted to verify since we have a number of people successfully using it on High Sierra now.

Thank you for your response! Fresh install was attempted using the Mac installer as well as the Steam installer. Both fresh installs come with the option for Auto Detect GPU unchecked in the Wineskin.app, but do not produce the Fantasy Grounds opening dialog window. The app launches for about a minute or so in the Dock, and then encounters a segfault and quits itself.

It turns out that I'm actually running 10.13.2 beta 2. If you can confirm normal functionality in 10.13.1 I can reinstall back to a public release of macOS. If interested, I've posted the crash log here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fe2epgxc7797rc5/Fantasy%20Grounds583052619Wine_2017-11-10-060807_squirrelbox.crash?dl=0

If you would prefer I open a support ticket rather than use this thread, I am happy to do so.

Thank you!

Thanks for the report. We will get that over to our main Mac guy to review. We have had a number of successful tests on the new beta release of High Sierra, so that *might* be the cause. While that is a variable to consider, I hesitate to lay it completely on that when there could be other variables at work as well.

I recently updated to High Sierra and found my FG no longer working. I just reinstalled using the link above after backing up my old install. Once I got my modules, extensions, campaigns, and characters copied over from the back up everything seems fine. I thought I'd add another successful datapoint in hopes it helps someone in some way.

So I have been trying to get this working with help from Zacchaeus on Discord. I found that clicking the "Use Mac driver instead of X11" worked for me.
I have no idea what that means but it worked.

Quick Note: The pop up window for settings is under the static Update window. It's a minor thing if you jump to another virtual desktop and come back the windows change place. Otherwise you cant access the pop-up window and the mac just beeps at you.

Okay, I am a bit slow with this and I apologize in advance. Think of me as one who can get lost in her own bathroom when explaining things. I have updated my Mac. Recently got FG to work but I have lost the combat tracker and all the nifty tools! Can anyone help me out? It's just buggy....

Hello DMistress,

I'm not sure I follow exactly what you are seeing. Can you add some screenshots of what you are seeing? Also, double check any extensions that you have loaded for your campaign and see if those are causing a problem by turning them all off and then loading them one at a time to test.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Wineskin. I'll send screenshots if this doesn't work

Okay so here is the screenshot where my combat tracker went missing. I realize I am not a genius. I also realize I am not a moron....what the heck happened to it?!

Steps I took:
Uninstall and Reinstall (about three times total)
Searched the forums and unchecked the GPU box on Screen Options
Screamed
Cried
Drank some wine
Tried all of the above again

Now I am headed to church this morning and asking God for divine intervention so I can play online with my children this afternoon after BBQ and fixin's. (Yes, I am from the South...yes, I did graduate from a real college and not that fake Alabama place!) And I can't post the screenshot....

So let me see if I can explain:

On the right hand side of the screen, for me, at least, I have all the icons (Library, Parse, Spells, etc). EXCEPT there is no icon or way to get the combat tracker. I have the PC tab....I haven't been using FG in a minute so maybe I am forgetting where it is and how to get there?

I bought the full standard version (non-subscription) of FG through Steam and have yet to get the installer from Steam to actually work! This is the second time that I have tried this program (1st time over a year ago) and it has NOT changed. Piss poor support for MAC, another PC only tool with a crappy port to Mac rather than a true cross-platform program. I HATE that fact that this REQUIRES a third party app just to run on the mac; especially one that installs without any practical use for non-programmers/non-developers. When is UI gonna get some love? -it's terribly archaic, and reminiscent of Win95 quality; not to mention the serious lack of intuitiveness. If I didn't need/want a tool for this purpose; i would demand a refund from Steam.

On top of this, when i downloaded the installer from the FG site, the stupid thing installs the 'free' demo version rather than the full version i paid for. The version in the upper right shows "v3.3.6FREE." I registered with my Steam CD Key and it did not fix it. I linked my Steam account, and nothing. Fortunately, re-entering the key w/syntax fixed the 'free' edition problem. But I posted this as a complaint against the mac version of FG due to the crap I had to deal with on just getting the program to run. I purchased through Steam so that I could use the software on both my mac's and PC's (I have 2 of each) via the Steam client. But, mac users need to be aware of this problem with the Steam installer and the fact that the program will not actually launch from Steam on a mac (at least not mine). Hopefully, I have no more issues or that refund request will become a reality.

Hi eebow421

Sorry you are experiencing hassles. For most mac users the Steam install works fine - but not everyone. When the Steam install doesnt work the recommendation is to install it from the links on the Home page of this website.
All versions - Mac and PC, from Steam and this website download as a Demo client. You then add your key and run the updater.

The UI is unlikely to change radically in the near future. It has been designed for use with RPGs and despite some initial learning curve is quite efficient and intuitive once you start using it.
In the future there will be a native Mac client however that will be ready when its ready.

Hello eebow421, we are sorry to hear of your frustrating start. There are indeed a few extra hurdles in place for Mac users, but with a few adjustment we believe that you can experience much the same thing as the Windows platform users. For instance, all DLC will work on the Mac and cross-play between Mac and PC users is fully supported. Please see the post below with some additional tips to adjust to using Fantasy Grounds on the Mac.

eebow421, I run it on a Mac with High Sierra and it runs very well. I have 5 players that are on PCs that connect to me and I haven’t had any problems. I am using the installer from the web site and it was easy to get it up and running, though I can’t comment on the Steam version.

I'm not entirely sure that this is the best place to post this question, but I'm planning on purchasing FG and I'm on a Mac, is the preferred method of download through STEAM or to directly download it to my computer. What advantages or disadvantages does STEAM offer?

Welcome to the forums!

The Steam install is similar to the download from the website - but the recommendation is to use the download from the FG as it's a little more up to date in terms of the Wine wrapper used - the end FG version will be exactly the same whichever installer you use. There's really no difference with buying from Steam or the FG store - you actually get to be able to use both as license Keys are synced between FG and Steam. The main potential advantage with purchasing from Steam is that you may get a better regional pricing if you're not in the USA. Other than that, I'd recommend purchasing from the FG store - more revenue goes to the FG developers.

I use Fantasy Grounds on both the Mac and PC. The only real difference that I find is for local table top gaming, on the Mac you can only run one copy so you cannot join to yourself to display player maps. I have no issues with Wine including since I upgraded to Mojave.

The other comment I would make is that if you want to add sounds from Syrinscape, you really need to be on the PC version (otherwise it is all manual). This is a limitation of Syrinscape not Fantasy Grounds. If you own a copy of Windows (not the OEM version that comes with a PC), you can install it with a program like Virtual Box on your Mac and then have Fantasy Grounds in the environment you need at the time (note: if you are hosting make sure you use a bridged virtual network adapter to have the virtual machine have an independent IP address or users will not be able to connect).

You can have a localhost instance but you need to add another wineskin/winery/app for the second instance.

Hi, hope this is the right place for my question. The day before yesterday I had FG stop opening for me. I uninstalled it and reinstalled and last night it worked fine. Today it's not opening again. I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6. Auto Detect GPU Info for Direct 3D is unchecked, and I tried checking "Use Mac Driver instead of X11" and that changed nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

I had something very similar happen to me, and I discovered that the OS's security had quarantined the app for some reason. The following Terminal command removed it from quarantine, and I was able to open it again:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /path-to-Fantasy-Grounds

where you would replace the /path-toFantasy-Grounds with wherever you've installed it. Probably something like:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Fantasy\ Grounds.app
