I was hooked up with someone that had similar availability hours to mine, and after a little chatting we were in a session where I was being shown all the basics of Fantasy Grounds, as well as D&D character creation (I am completely new to both). Yes, a very nice community. The advantage of a "chat and voice forum" is, that you can be much more specific in direct talk.

I came to 5e some month ago via these Monday Series "Critical Role" and because my RPG home group is more conservative and not interested in trying new systems my idea was to try a 5e round via internet.

And I came to FG via some you tube videos from Digital Dungeon Master. So I bought the ultimate license but had some start difficulties - mainly in understanding the basic mechanisms but also in the technic (e.g. how to open GM and player simultaneously like in the tutorial videos of FG or which voice system should be used to play FG) - and had the idea first to collect some experience in handling FG as player in an experienced FG group before trying as GM with a new group of my own.

I searched and wrote in the LFG Thread but after some days (where I was informed by e-mail when a new answer has been made in the thread) the thread sunk deeper and deeper and as I searched again yesterday, I saw this FG College Thread, pressed the link and the first question was answered: "Discord" was installed in less than 5 minutes which is fine as voice chat for FG. Then I just was busy to make me confident with discord, I was welcomed by a teacher and after further 10 Minutes he had collected a group of 4 people and started an 2 hour test adventure which answered many of my newbie questions just by playing.
Another nice thing: As we had in the group some 5e specific questions we just asked in another channel for support and got it nearly instantaneously :)

That's cool. I was the same way. Purchased in 2011, but was disappointed and discouraged until this past February. So, we have updated our Discord server and have assembled a great team of staff and teachers to help out. We have a carriculum goal, an in-server West Marches style campaign coming shortly, and hopefully some industry guest speakers. We are very large goals. You can almost count on getting help sooner than later. If I have the time I will train you up myself. Please join us, you will get something out if it. We are also looking for DMs and teacher DMs for all time zones!

If you are interested in "spectating" there are TONS of videos on YouTube (I have 500+ alone) using Fantasy Grounds. Do a google search for a campaign you'd like to watch, Have fun!

Everyone is so helpful and there are alot of classes available in a variety of time slots. Would your community be a place for a person who hasn't played a game in 20 years and would like to get back to it? I have no intention of ever being a GM just want to play. I was looking at your site and reading replies it seems to be leaning more for DM's. Also does your group just support D&D or other games as well? I don't have a local group to play with, and don't like leaving my house much anyways, so FG seems the way to go. Also should a person be familiar with the rules or are there ways of learning through play without buying the material if you just want to try it out. (not that i'm looking to be a leach, I'll happily buy them if it something I will use.) Sorry for all the questions, I have a bit of anxiety meeting new people and wanted to know if it would be worth it to muscle through that to achieve what I am looking for. I do use discord and voice so I'm not that anxious, just a little shy at first. I appreciate your time in answering these questions.

Drebb, Fantasy Grounds College is helpful for people who want to just be players, also. They support multiple games (I've had classes in Starfinder, D&D 5E, Savage Worlds, Call of Cthulhu). You may see more things involving D&D but a lot of what you learn in those can be applied to other systems, also. Especially if it is centered around how to use things like Combat, creating characters, etc.

As for rules familiarity, I do not think it is necessary. There are introductory adventures. I always let people know my experience with FG (some) and a ruleset (D&D 5E: a little).

Everyone has been very helpful, also. I've seen people have questions and they get answers quickly via text chat or even via impromptu voice chats.

How the heck do I find a group? I am part of a discord group bust all the missions they start are always during my working hours. I just want to find a group thats in the evening (my time((eastern time)). lol. Or a session on the weekends in the evening. I feel your pain. There is a DM shortage for sure, all platforms. I am trying to train a Cadre of gamers to use Fantasy Grounds, especially from the DM Game master standpoint to help alleviate this issue, one group at a time. For the rest of this week until the first we are holding a spring break free for all in FG College. We have had a few games per day running since Saturday. These are mainly for practice and DMs new to the concept. Rob and I made a show about the lack of games. We'll, we called it a nice title, but the real title was supporting be, I can't find a f*ck*n game! I use the program to dungeon master in a table top. Someone's back I did try your server but it just seemed like a lot of people were not available when I was. I would start some online groups but I'm not comfortable enough with the program to do so. But it's going to take practice not just a session.

Yes, I agree, it will take some time. How long has it been since you joined us last? What type of hours do you keep now? I'd be willing to help you one on one. The online group is already started in FG College. I teach DM 101 Class every Friday, and we have recorded some of these sessions. I apologize in advance over some of our vacancies in time. You can request classes besides conform to the posted lessons. Lot's of good people that volunteer there time now..The practice you seek are there in the form of 'in-house' one-shots. I can also help connect you with players or other servers that offer more games, as we are a teaching server mainly. Also, we did a two week Spring Break event this year, as well as participation in FG Con this year so far. We are also sponsoring a staff and student

I was fiddling around with the program and watching the recommended videos, and Fantasy Grounds looks great! :D

I've played with Roll20 (free account) for about a year and a half, so I have a general idea of how things could work. It's just re-orienting myself with a brand new UI. I'm not used to so many features, lol! :)

Yeah, it’s definitely a lot of new stuff there. I don’t know coding, so I never did much of that in Roll20. We just treated it like an offline tabletop game, and just used very little automation.

We had our inventory in a shared Google Excel document, and just manually typed regular rolling. No automated spells or whatever.

We usually just manually typed almost everything up or created one or two simple macros in (non-5e) games I’ve played in.

The technical software/coding stuff tends to be tricky for me and makes me feel very overwhelmed.

I like that there are people who already have coded some stuff ahead of time.

I mean, I still don’t mind doing things manually, but the automation stuff seems very helpful (if a bit much at times).

It’s all learning process. I seem to be getting the basics of chargen. Now I just got to get some of that combat and interaction trainings. ^_^

in addition to FGC, the Savage Mojo teams offers one shots every other Monday in the Suzerain Continuum, Savage Worlds ruleset. Next one is tomorrow night, I'll be running a Set Rising one shot I have run before. Also a good place to ask the writers first hand what some of what they write MEANS, how it is supposed to work etc.
We also work with FGC people like Baufrin since we have common goals, to help as many people learn Fantasy Grounds (and for us Savage Worlds and the Suzerain Continuum) as possible.
But as many here know, I am a little old grandmother educated before we were even allowed calculators in school, but I still managed to learn all of this with the help of the community and some wonderful GM's and developers. So welcome to the community, the games, with time nearly everyone finds what suits them. :)

I'm new to both fantasy grounds and fantasy grounds college. A few months ago i didn't know fantasy grounds existed. Now for the last month a huge portion of my weeknight free time is related to the product...learning it and dnd 5e at the same time plus playing in a campaign hosted with fg.

Its been a busy month for me with this hobby. But its been productive and a large reason why besides the fine folks of this community here on the official fg forums....is fantasy grounds college. I have taken 3 classes now each with a different instructor.

All of them were excellent and more than willing to help their students learn. They are easy going and thus the classes are comfortable (i have mild social anxiety and even i felt comfortable and not nervous to ask questions for example). Mostly though ...highly informative.

I highly recommend checking fantasy grounds College out. Its an incredible resource to the fantasy grounds community.

There are many paths for learning to use Fantasy Grounds and the Fantasy Grounds College is but one of them. In truth the best way to learn to use Fantasy Grounds is to dive in and join a game and figure it out as you go. Start with the simple basics and add the advanced features as you get more comfortable with the tool. The Wiki contains all the information you need and questions posed on the official Discord server are answered by the developers, content creators, and subject matter experts.
It is worth noting that Fantasy Grounds College is not a place to find a game, what they do is provide a place for members to "teach" others to use Fantasy Grounds in a controlled, structured environment, which may or may-not be the best way for everyone to learn. Here one can get a quick and dirty, working knowledge of the basics, using the platform as a player or as a GM, ask technical questions, and share knowledge. As a long term place to teach, share, and be involved it quickly devolves to just another online guild, with the same machinations and power struggles. I can honestly say that if you are able to avoid the Machiavellian posturing this can be a good place to hang out, just avoid leadership positions like a swarm of bees.

Have you ever wanted to participate in Gary Con but you just can't make it to Lake Geneva, WI? Well, for the second year in a row,there is a Virtual way to participate. Ok so how does this all work, I've watched a few great videos about this and it looks very nice. I will likely invest in product but I want to make sure I can run my own what I guess you would call a Campaign and again what would be called a home brew.

Good Afternoon everyone. I am looking to learn the dynamics of Fantasy Grounds and was wondering if there are any groups willing to teach a noob the layout of this program.
Ultimately, I want to DM for a Dragon Age based campaign. I don't want to waste anyone's time and claim I want to stick around for a long campaign, just enough to learn the game.
I'm even happy to accept a character who is terminally set to get killed off at some point.

Totally happy to help you out. D&D 5E is way more open to new players than previous editions in a lot of ways. That said, there are tons of other Fantasy Ground resources to help you get familiar including the Fantasy Grounds College.

Hey all. We are having a 2 day event over the weekend of October 16th and 17th for lots of spooky games. We are looking for some GMs that would like to sign up to run a game during this event.

The only requirements are the game has to be played on Fantasy Grounds (either Classic or Unity) and you need to use our game rooms on the FGC Discord for your audio, and your game should be spooky. It can be funny spooky, straight out horror, Day of the Dead, you get the picture. We'd love to get a variety of games from different rulesets. I have a page on our website that I created with info on how to sign up for our Discord and Website (if you're not already a member) and I have templates (one for Classic games and one for Unity games) to make posting your game simple. There is also a video on step-by-step how to post your event.
