View Full Version : YouTube video praising Fantasy Grounds?

So about a year ago I found a YouTube video of a D&D personality praising Fantasy Grounds and I pointed a friend towards it. I thought it was from Matt Colville, but I looked for it today for another person and I couldn't find it. I am not thinking of the video of Digital Dungeon Master comparing FG to Roll20, this was more of someone just going on about how great FG is. They might have even been giving away a copy?

Does this sound familiar to anyone or am I imagining things?

Gamerati perhaps?

Matt did indeed do a couple FG videos and gave away some Ultimate (I think?) licenses as well. Then he had some technical problems, and a rather poor "help" response from the community who sometimes take things a little too personally for no reason, and ended up abandoning FG, so deleted all his FG videos.

tabletopping iirc.

Edit: Not tabletopping, apparently he renamed himself 'the digital dungeon master'

Yes that was unfortunate on all sides.

Ah, that explains it. That's too bad...

Yes, it is. Especially since the issue he was having problems with already had the exact solution he wanted. Just took a couple days for someone (in his subreddit, not here, sadly) to point it out. But the community had already gone off the deep end and drove him away.

That's a shame. He would have been a good person to have as a spokesperson. He's great at giving advice in an easy to understand manner.

Matt didn't delete his FG videos. I was just watching them and there a quite a few.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that this forum community would be anything but supportive - it's an oasis compared to most of the internet.

Sounds like Matt threw the baby out with the bathwater.

I found it hard to believe, too, but yeah, a bunch of the community took personal offense that someone (and I doubt they knew of his channel and growing influence at the time) would dare suggest that FG was less than perfection incarnate. Normally we're an open and helpful bunch around here but that time, not so much.

That's great if he didn't actually delete his videos. He posted here that he was going to and I thought even in his final FG video he said he was going to delete them all.

That thread was closed, and not to rehash an old discussion, but there was no one in that thread attacking him. It was more like people confirmed that the way that FG does saving throws was the way it did it (FG rolls instead of the player when the spell is resolved). He wanted it different. Even Doug came on and tried to explain it but by then he had already left the thread.

It was much more people talking at each other instead of to each other and not an attack.

It's easy to misinterpret the tone and connotations of responses on a forum. Such led to a great deal of misunderstandings. It was very unfortunate. As we all know, when people are frustrated, they are prone to react quickly and fail to consider anything but their first impression.

Anyway, it never hurts for all of us to take an extra second once in a awhile and not only consider how to best interpret another's post, but also how our own might be (mis)interpreted.

Sure.

But that goes both ways and the reader has significant responsibility to keep opposing opinions in perspective. Not everyone posting a thought to a forum wants to take extra time and effort to parse it all out so that substantial differences of opinion won't hurt someone's digital feelings.

FG's forums are really helpful. But "help" isn't where things get dicey. It's when opinions collide. The forums are not devoid of apologists, over-zealous fans, opportunistic critics, and doe-eyed futurists. People wading into the opinion pool should be prepared to meet-and-greet with all of them.

What I've found when posting a complaint (or a response to one) is to type my response and then just leave it there before posting and walk away for 5-10 minutes. When I come back I'll read it again and make edits/tone down if necessary, or post.

It's easy to bang away on the keyboard and hit Submit in the heat of the moment, but giving the passion time to go from boiling to maybe a simmer can make a world of difference in how it's received.

I'm a recent subscriber to "Digital Dungeon Master" on Youtube. I cannot speak to any comments he made a year ago but in his most recent videos he has praised FG several times. As far as I can tell he is still using and featuring FG in his online campaigns that he is currently streaming several times a week. I don't get the impression that he is holding any grudges against FG or it's community. And all of his "Howto" video's for FG seem to still be up on his channel.

Matt and Dave are two very different people! :) And yes, Dave still uses FG. In fact, he DMs for the SmiteWorks official D&D game. He's a good guy; if you get a chance to play in one of his games, do it!
