I live in an apartment with no access to my router, and so I bought a VPN (pureVPN if it matters. I had seen that it worked for others) to handle port forwarding. I got a dedicated IP and their firewall just to be safe, but no one seems to be able to connect to my game.

Fantasy Grounds is allowed through my PC's firewall, and the VPN's firewall is set to open all ports. I am using a dedicated IP, and the IP address in the external space matches the VPN's. I have also tried using a non-dedicated IP address, but that didn't work either.

I have read other posts on the matter, but I still can't seem to get it to work. What am I missing? I'm not great at network management so there error is likely on my end. I'd appreciate any help!

Welcome to the forum Zorahclan! PureVPN works for most (I use it) with minimal issues normally. Some recent posts indicate that usually it is a firewall or virus issue. If you think you have the firewall settings ok I would check your virus software. What virus scanning software do you use? Try to make PureVPN and fantasy grounds trusted applications if they aren't already. I'm sure others will be by to help as well.

One thing that seems to often pop up, make sure your VPN network (Network and Sharing settings) is set to Private (Home or Work type) not Public. Even if you allow exceptions, Windows won't allow connections if the network is marked as public.

That seems like it might be my issue. How would I go about checking it? I went to my Network and Sharing settings and looked over the properties of my VPN's connection, and I didn't see an option to change it to a home connection. Maybe I'm just blind...

You might have to Google it. For some reason sometimes the link isn't there (I don't know why). Normally the link is right next to it. This is a screen shot from Win 7.

I looked it up how to do it on windows 10, and I believe it has worked! The connection test finished with a success this time, but I will test it with actual players and get back to you.

All right it is working! Thanks a lot everyone.

Just for anyone else that may have the problem I fixed by changing the network to private, and here is a guide on how to do it on windows 10.
