I have a very very forgetful player that always forgets to see if he knocks a giant prone when he hits one.

Is there a way to do and IFT with the damage to do the check whenever damage is applied?

Nope. IFT only looks at conditions and a small set of conditional operators on the target. Info here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Effects#A_Note_on_IF_and_IFT. It cannot do standard Boolean If ... Then ... logic. Effects also can't trigger actions.

Your player is going to have to start remembering... ;-)
