View Full Version : Windows Update Questions (and audio/graphics settings)

Morning, all. I have a question and a comment on windows 10 updates. So, first off, I've noticed that when a major windows update occurs, it appears many of my audio and I believe graphics drivers reset to default settings. In most cases that might not be an issue. As a streamer, though, it requires me to remember to check all my settings once an update occurs. I'm going to check after the next major update to be certain, but I believe some of the things I have seen change after I finally allowed the Windows Creator update are as follows:

windows audio default settings for playback and recording devices reset to default
naming convention for my input and outputs (Example: Voicemeeter VAIO is now just VAIO, my virtual cable inputs reset to all saying Cable input (instead of Cable A input or Cable B input)
within voicemeter banana in the panel, since the naming conventions changed, I had to reset my input/outputs in some of the columns
discord voice outputs reset to default (so I needed to change back to headset and cable a input which are the settings I want)
nvidia graphics card (now, I THINK this happened but I could be wrong): I swear I used to have a program setting that made sure to use the nvidia graphics card when using fantasy grounds instead of the integrated graphics card, but after the latest update I didn't see my program setting anymore, so I set it up again

So, my first point is just a warning to make sure you check all your settings for audio/graphics programs after a windows update, particularly if you stream! (As a side note, I don't think my OBS settings changed).

My question, though is that I've read that windows 10 automatically updates drivers now. I know this has been the case for some time, but I've read it can play havoc with nvidia drivers and sometimes rolls back driver updates as it installs what it thinks is new. So, do you all think it is best practice to turn off the automatic driver updates? I've read of various ways to do this (in the control panel or regedit hack). Just curious what others are doing. So far I haven't seen a major issue with my nvidia drivers and automatic updates turned on and i always hate messing with auto updates.

Thanks in advance!
