View Full Version : What is the meaning of fieldlight and fielddark controls in the D&D rulesets?

So this is probably a question for MoonWizard, but maybe someone else knows the answer... I have been wondering if fieldlight controls (the lighted boxes) mean something different than fielddark controls on the D&D character sheets. I can't seem to figure out if there is some kind of logic behind it. It must signify something

I see them both used as generic backgrounds of frames and buttons. 'fieldlight' is used more than 'fielddark', but they both are used often enough. I think that 'fielddark' was used mostly for fields that you could drop a value in. Don't quote me on that though.

You can also use them so that when you mouse over a box it will shade dark. In the 5e ruleset I think they do it on damage boxes in the actions/weapons section.

They are just generic frames that have different thickness/transparency. You can define and use any frames that you want.

In general, my guideline when creating windows is to use fielddark for editable fields, and fieldlight for non-editable fields.

All of the templates built in CoreRPG are written to use those frames in that manner.

Thanks Moon, my curiosity is satisfied! I couldn't seem to sort that one out somehow, and it has been bugging me just a little for quite some time :)
