Creating PCs

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on programs such as Hero Lab or PCgen, or should I just use FG to build my PCs?

PcGen worked fine for us.

Certainly for 5e making the character in FG is very easy. PF is way more complicated and the two programs you mention will likely help unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the system.

I's say PCGen definitely for PF, it's also useful for 5e. Of course I might be a bit biased.

One thing to think about, for 5E, FG creates characters just fine. But it does NOT manage them. Meaning if you want to play around, add a level of this, add a level or that, see what this option or that option will do... FG doesn't do that well. Look to PCGen or HL.
