How to have DM use of PC's Spell or Power Group use a slot

As DM, when, on behalf of a character, I use on of their spells or ability within a power group, it doesn't tick off one of their uses. Is there a way to do this? or a mode I need to be in to have this work?

The spell or power group uses don't automatically tick off uses. The player (or the DM) needs to do that manually.
